The Digital SAT and ACT English sections, as well as the EST Writing test, all have a section devoted to Standard English Conventions. This section is designed to assess one's ability to recognize and correct grammar, usage, and mechanics problems in passages. This includes a variety of topics, such as punctuation, usage and mechanics, and sentence structure. One must have a good understanding of grammar rules and rhetoric in order to do well on these sections. The SAT had long been seen as more of an aptitude test whereas the ACT has been more closely associated with testing students on their knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and various other rules. So, it is very important to understand the period rules of each of these tests in order to do well on them. It is also important to be able to recognize and correct any errors in the passages presented in order to get a good score.
