If you would rather start with a small themed set, try the 25 high-frequency Digital SAT words, grouped into categories such as academic methodology and research terms.
We split SAT vocabulary across three pages. This one is the 1,000-word reference. The 100 common SAT words list is the place to start, and the SAT vocabulary list A to Z puts 2023 to 2025 Digital SAT words in alphabetical order. Watch the vocab videos for more Word Sprints with Mr. O.
Use the definition with a sentence
Choose a small group of unfamiliar words. Read each meaning, cover it, and write a sentence using the word. Check your sentence against a dictionary if you are unsure of the sense or part of speech. Revisit the words you could not explain without looking.
In a practice question, read the sentence around the word. Identify clues such as a contrast, a cause or an example. A word's positive or negative association alone will not tell you whether it fits. Use our Reading and Writing domain guide to see how Words in Context fits into SAT preparation.
For the bigger picture of how vocabulary sits alongside the other tested skills, the module timing, and scoring, see our complete Digital SAT guide and study plan.
If you test on November 7, 2026, our November 2026 SAT vocab predictions use repeat data from our question banks to show which Words in Context practice to do first.
The short definitions below are reference senses, not complete dictionary entries. Some entries use an inflected form of a word. For another meaning or usage, consult a dictionary and return to the sentence.
Why a word list is only the first step
From our practice data: On The Test Advantage, Words in Context questions were answered correctly only 68% of the time, below the Reading and Writing average of 71% (based on 193 sampled Words in Context answers from 74 students on The Test Advantage, Jun–Sep 2026).
Words in Context questions ask for the sense a word takes in one sentence. A list gives you one short definition, so the familiar meaning can become the wrong answer. Here is an original SAT-style example written for this guide.
The reviewer's praise for the new bridge design was qualified: she called the plan elegant but questioned whether its cost estimates were realistic.
As used in the text, what does "qualified" most nearly mean?
- A) certified
- B) limited
- C) enthusiastic
- D) earned
Show the answer and the trap
B) limited. The clue is the contrast after the colon. She praised the design "but questioned" its costs, so her praise had limits. A is the trap: "having the right credentials" is the everyday meaning of "qualified," but it does not fit this sentence. C ignores the "but," and D describes praise in general, not this sentence.
