SAT Percentiles

SAT percentiles show what percentage of test takers scored at or below a given score. College Board publishes two percentile groups for every SAT score: a nationally representative group and a user group of recent test takers. Nationally representative percentiles are derived from a research study of U.S. students in 11th and 12th grade and are weighted to represent all U.S. students in those grades, regardless of whether they typically take the SAT. User group percentiles are based on the actual SAT scores of students that graduated in the past three school years.

  1. Look up a score in the quick lookup box, or drag the score gauge
  2. Compare the national and user-group percentile
  3. Open the full "good score" page or set a study goal

Frequently asked questions

What do SAT percentiles mean?

An SAT percentile tells you the percentage of test takers who scored at or below your score. For example, a percentile of 75 means you scored higher than about 75% of the comparison group.

What is the difference between nationally representative and user group percentiles?

Nationally representative percentiles are derived from a research study of U.S. students in 11th and 12th grade and are weighted to represent all U.S. students in those grades, regardless of whether they typically take the SAT. User group percentiles are based on the actual SAT scores of students that graduated in the past three school years.

Where do these SAT percentiles come from?

These percentiles are published by College Board at https://research.collegeboard.org/reports/sat-suite/understanding-scores/sat, last checked 2026-09-23. This page reproduces the official total and section percentile tables without modification.
