Digital SAT Format 2026: Complete Guide to Sections, Timing, Scoring & What to Expect
Last Updated: March 2026 | Reading time: 12 min
The Digital SAT works differently than a paper test moved online. The section layout, time limits, and adaptive scoring are all new. Going in without knowing the format means you are guessing at strategy.

Digital SAT Format 2026: Sections, Timing & Scoring Guide Explained: What This Question Tests
This example is useful for practicing Digital SAT Format 2026: Sections, Timing & Scoring Guide Explained because it shows how a student must connect the wording of the sentence to the logic of the answer choices. Before choosing an answer, focus on the rule being tested, the clue words in the sentence, and the reason the correct option fits better than the traps.
The basic structure at a glance
Not sure how the adaptive format affects your score? Take a free 27-question Reading & Writing module that uses the hard Module 2 algorithm — no card needed.
Try 5 Free →The Digital SAT has two sections: Reading & Writing and Math. Each section contains two modules. That means four modules total. You take them in order with a 10-minute break between the two sections.
| Section | Module | Questions | Time | Adaptive? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reading & Writing | Module 1 | 27 | 32 min | Fixed |
| Reading & Writing | Module 2 | 27 | 32 min | Yes (Easy or Hard) |
| Math | Module 1 | 22 | 35 min | Fixed |
| Math | Module 2 | 22 | 35 min | Yes (Easy or Hard) |
| Total | 98 questions | 134 min | ||
Total seat time on test day is closer to 2 hours and 44 minutes when you include the 10-minute break, check-in time, and the brief pre-test setup. But the actual testing time is 2 hours and 14 minutes.
Section 1: Reading & Writing
The Reading & Writing section contains 54 questions split across two 27-question modules. You get 32 minutes per module, which gives you about 71 seconds per question.
Each question comes with a short passage, usually 1 to 5 sentences. This is a change from the old paper SAT, which used long multi-paragraph passages with several questions attached. On the digital test, one passage equals one question. This format works in your favor because you do not need to read an entire passage to answer a single question at the end.
The four question domains
College Board groups Reading & Writing questions into four domains. Every question belongs to one of these:
| Domain | % of R&W Questions | What it tests |
|---|---|---|
| Craft and Structure | ~28% | Words in context, text structure, purpose, cross-text connections |
| Information and Ideas | ~26% | Main idea, inference, evidence retrieval, data interpretation |
| Standard English Conventions | ~26% | Punctuation, grammar, sentence boundaries, verb tense, modifiers |
| Expression of Ideas | ~20% | Transitions, rhetorical synthesis, conciseness |
The distribution is roughly even. No single domain dominates. That said, Craft and Structure questions, especially vocabulary in context, trip up students who have not prepared specifically for them. The words tested are not obvious, and the answer depends entirely on the passage, not on the dictionary definition.
Reading & Writing question order
Within each module, questions appear in a predictable order by domain. Craft and Structure questions tend to come first. Information and Ideas questions come next. Standard English Conventions questions appear in the second half. Expression of Ideas questions come near the end.
This order does not indicate difficulty. Some Craft and Structure questions early in the module are harder than Convention questions late in the module. Treat each question independently.
Section 2: Math
The Math section has 44 questions split across two 22-question modules. You get 35 minutes per module, which gives you about 95 seconds per question. That is more time per question than Reading & Writing, but you will need most of it on the harder questions.
Questions 1 through 15 in each module are multiple choice with four options. Questions 16 through 22 are student-produced responses, meaning you type your own answer. There are no answer choices for these. Answers can be integers, decimals, or fractions.
Math topics covered
| Math Domain | % of Math Questions | Main Topics |
|---|---|---|
| Algebra | ~35% | Linear equations, systems, inequalities, linear functions |
| Advanced Math | ~35% | Quadratics, polynomials, exponential functions, rational expressions |
| Problem Solving & Data | ~15% | Statistics, probability, data interpretation, inference |
| Geometry & Trigonometry | ~15% | Area, volume, circles, triangles, basic trig, imaginary numbers |
Algebra and Advanced Math together make up 70% of the Math section. If your goal is a 650+ in Math, those two domains should get most of your study time.

How adaptive testing works
This is the part most students do not understand, and it matters more than anything else in this guide.
Module 1 is the same for every student taking that test form. It contains a mix of easy, medium, and hard questions. Your performance in Module 1 determines which version of Module 2 you get.
Score well in Module 1 and the system routes you to the Hard Module 2. Score below the threshold and you get Easy Module 2.
If you are routed to Hard Module 2, you have access to scaled scores up to 800 in that section. The curve is generous because the questions are harder.
If you are routed to Easy Module 2, your scaled score is capped in the 590-670 range for that section, even if you answer every question correctly. Getting a perfect raw score on Easy Module 2 cannot get you to 700.
This means Module 1 is the most important module. How you perform there shapes the ceiling for your entire section score.
The routing cutoffs are not published by College Board. Based on community data from students who have taken Bluebook practice tests, the approximate thresholds are:
| Section | Module 1 Questions | Approx. threshold for Hard M2 |
|---|---|---|
| Reading & Writing | 27 | ~18-20 correct |
| Math | 22 | ~16-18 correct |
These are estimates. The actual threshold varies slightly between test forms. But the strategic implication is clear: if you are targeting 700+, do not rush Module 1. Every question there carries more weight than a Module 2 question.
Scoring: how 800 points are calculated
The Digital SAT scores each section on a 200-800 scale. Your total score is the sum of the two sections, giving you a composite between 400 and 1600.
There is no guessing penalty. A wrong answer and a skipped answer both give you zero. You should answer every question even if you are not confident.
The scaled score is not a straight conversion from raw score. It accounts for which Module 2 you took and adjusts accordingly. A student who answers 35 out of 44 Math questions correctly on the Hard path will score higher than a student who answers 40 out of 44 on the Easy path.
| Score Target | R&W Raw Needed (Hard M2) | Math Raw Needed (Hard M2) |
|---|---|---|
| 1600 (perfect) | 54/54 | 44/44 |
| 1500 | ~49-51/54 | ~39-41/44 |
| 1400 | ~44-46/54 | ~33-36/44 |
| 1300 | ~38-42/54 | ~27-30/44 |
| 1200 | ~32-36/54 | ~21-24/44 |
These are approximate ranges. The exact conversion depends on the difficulty of the specific test form you receive.
Tools available during the test
Desmos graphing calculator
Desmos is built into the Bluebook app on every Math question. You do not need to bring a separate calculator, although you are allowed to bring an approved external calculator if you prefer. The built-in Desmos can graph equations, find intercepts, solve systems, create tables, and run regression. Most students who learn how to use it effectively save 30-60 seconds per relevant question.
Reference sheet
A math reference sheet is available on every Math question. It includes geometric formulas: area, perimeter, volume, special right triangles (30-60-90 and 45-45-90), circle formulas, and the quadratic formula. You can access it at any time by clicking the reference icon.
Annotation tools
On Reading & Writing questions, you can highlight text in the passage. This works like a physical highlighter. It does not delete when you move to the next question, so you can highlight key information and come back to it if you mark a question for review.
Mark for review
You can flag any question to come back to it before time runs out on that module. The flag is visible in the question navigator at the top of the screen. You cannot go back to a previous module once you submit it.
Timer
A countdown timer shows how much time is left in the current module. By default it shows minutes. When time drops below 5 minutes, it switches to a seconds display. You can hide the timer if it causes anxiety, but it will reappear in the final 5 minutes regardless.
