Quick Answer

Hard Module 2 SAT math questions are the tougher second Math module you get after a strong Module 1. To solve them, read the last line first, name the skill, pick algebra or Desmos, and check the trap before you answer. Keep a steady pace of about 1 minute 35 seconds per question.

Read it. Then test it.

This article explains the skill. TTA shows whether you can use it under exam timing.

Question banks: October 2026 Math question bank

Notes and practice need a free account: one click with Google, and you land straight on the lesson.

This guide gives you a five-step method, three real hard questions from our SAT Question Bank, and a practice plan. Every fact about the test comes from College Board. Every question was solved by hand and checked against the bank's answer key.

What is hard Module 2 on SAT Math?

The SAT Math section has two modules of 22 questions each, with 35 minutes per module. Module 1 has "a broad mix of easy, medium, and hard questions." Then, "based on how you perform on the first module, the second module of questions will either be more difficult or less difficult," per College Board's structure page. This page calls the harder version "hard Module 2."

Three more official facts help you plan:

  • Not every question counts. Each module has 20 scored questions and 2 pretest questions that do not count, per College Board's Math specifications. You cannot tell which ones are pretest, so treat each question as real.
  • Pacing. The same page gives about 1 minute and 35 seconds per question.
  • Scores on either path. College Board says "a range of section scores are possible no matter which second module a student sees." It does not publish the cutoff for the harder module. See How Are Scores Calculated?

What makes hard Module 2 SAT math questions hard?

Hard questions come from the same four content domains as easier ones. In the hard items we read, the difference was an extra twist: a hidden step, a tempting wrong answer, or a setup that is slow by hand. College Board lists the domains as Algebra (about 35%), Advanced Math (about 35%), Problem-Solving and Data Analysis (about 15%) and Geometry and Trigonometry (about 15%).

To see where hard questions sit, we counted the 106 questions in our October 2026 SAT Math Question Bank by the difficulty tag in our database. These are The Test Advantage's tags, not College Board's.

DomainQuestionsTagged HardCommon hard twist

The twist column describes the hard items we read in this bank, including the three below. It is a guide, not an official College Board list. For a full list by type, see the hardest SAT math question types.

How to solve hard Module 2 SAT math questions: a 5-step method

  1. Read the last line first. Know what the question wants. Is it x, or x − 1, or 2x + 9y? Some hard questions ask for an expression, not a single variable.
  2. Name the skill. Say it in a few words: "percent increase," "system of equations," "sum of solutions." Naming it tells you which rule to use.
  3. Choose your tool. Use algebra when the structure is clean. Use Desmos when graphing is faster, such as finding where two graphs cross.
  4. Check the trap. Before you click, ask: did I answer the question asked? Did I lose a solution? Did I confuse "percent of" with "percent increase"?
  5. Move on if stuck. Bluebook has a Mark for Review tool, per its testing tools page. Flag the question, answer the next ones, then come back. Never leave a blank: College Board says it is better to guess than to leave a question blank.

Three real hard questions, solved step by step

All three come from our October 2026 SAT Math Question Bank and are tagged Hard. Try each one before you open the answer.

Question 1: Percent increase (Problem-Solving and Data Analysis)

At a hotel, guests used the pool for a total of t hours in March. At the same hotel, guests used the pool for 3.41t hours in April. What is the percent increase in the number of hours guests used the pool from March to April?

A) 2.41%
B) 3.41%
C) 241%
D) 341%

Show the answer

C) 241%. The increase is 3.41t − t = 2.41t. Divide by the starting amount: 2.41t ÷ t = 2.41, which is 241%. D is the trap. April is 341% of March, but the increase is 241%. A and B forget to multiply by 100.

Question 2: A system with a hidden substitution (Advanced Math)

y = x − 1
y = 19(x − 1)2 − 20

A solution to the given system of equations is (x, y). What is one possible value of x − 1?

A) −2
B) −20/19
C) −1
D) −1/19

Show the answer

C) −1. Let u = x − 1. The first equation says y = u, so u = 19u2 − 20. Rearrange: 19u2 − u − 20 = 0. Factor: (19u − 20)(u + 1) = 0, so u = 20/19 or u = −1. Only −1 is a choice. Check: x = 0 gives y = −1 in both equations. B has the wrong sign.

Desmos check: graph both equations and tap the two crossing points. They sit at x = 0 and x ≈ 2.05. Subtract 1 from each: −1 and about 1.05 (that is 20/19).

The shortcut is to solve for x − 1 as one block instead of solving for x first. Practice more: the free Quadratic Equations lesson notes and our systems of equations on Desmos guide.

Question 3: The lost solution (Advanced Math, student-produced response)

18(w − a)(w + 5) = 6(w + 5)

In the given equation, a is a constant. The sum of the solutions to the equation is 37/3. What is the value of a?

17. Do not divide both sides by (w + 5). That throws away a solution. Instead, move everything to one side and factor out (w + 5): (w + 5)[18(w − a) − 6] = 0. So w = −5, or 18(w − a) = 6, which gives w = a + 1/3. The sum is (a + 1/3) + (−5) = 37/3. Add 5 and subtract 1/3: a = 36/3 + 5 = 12 + 5 = 17.

The trap answer is 12. You get it if you divide by (w + 5) and forget w = −5.

Desmos check: graph y = 18(x − 17)(x + 5) − 6(x + 5). The zeros are −5 and about 17.33, and they add to about 12.33, which is 37/3.

When should you use Desmos on hard Module 2?

Bluebook includes a Desmos calculator on the SAT, per College Board's Bluebook tools page. On hard questions, Desmos helps most when you need to:

  • Find where two graphs cross (systems, like Question 2).
  • Find zeros of a messy quadratic (like the check in Question 3).
  • Test a value with a slider when a constant is unknown.

In Question 1, plain algebra was faster than any graph. Use Desmos when it saves steps, not by habit. Learn the moves on our Desmos for the Digital SAT page.

How should you pace hard Module 2?

College Board's math pacing is about 1 minute and 35 seconds per question. Hard questions can take longer, so save time on the ones you can do fast. One rule: if you have no plan after about a minute, mark it, guess, and move on. Come back with the time you saved.

How should you practice for hard Module 2?
