Quick Answer

College Board does not publish an exact number. Inferences is one of three skills in Information and Ideas, a domain with 12 to 14 scored questions. In 57 full test forms in The Test Advantage database, we counted 5.5 inference questions on average out of 54, with more in Module 2 than in Module 1.

College Board does not publish an exact number of inference questions on the SAT. Inferences is one of three skills in the Information and Ideas domain, which has 12 to 14 scored questions (about 26% of Reading and Writing). On 57 full test forms in our database, we counted 5.5 inference questions on average, out of 54.

Short answer: plan for about 5 or 6 inference questions per test. That was the count on 38 of our 57 forms, and Module 2 held more of them than Module 1. They are among the hardest questions in the section. You can practice them by topic in the Digital SAT question bank, where each English bank groups questions by domain.

How many inference questions are on the SAT, officially?

College Board gives a count for the domain, not for the skill. Its Assessment Framework for the Digital SAT Suite puts Information and Ideas at about 26% of scored questions, or 12 to 14. That domain tests three skills:

  • Central Ideas and Details: find the main idea or a key detail.
  • Command of Evidence: pick the quote or data that supports a claim.
  • Inferences: "draw a reasonable inference based on explicit and/or implicit information and ideas in a text."

The framework does not split the 12 to 14 among the three skills. So any single number you read online for inferences is an estimate. Ours comes from counting test forms in our database.

Most forms had 5 or 6. We looked at 142 complete Reading and Writing modules (27 questions each) from 85 test versions in our database, labeled by SAT date from June 2023 to December 2025. In 57 versions, both modules were complete. The 57 full forms broke down like this:

  • 3 or 4 inference questions: 8 forms
  • 5 inference questions: 23 forms
  • 6 inference questions: 15 forms
  • 7 inference questions: 9 forms
  • 8 or 9 inference questions: 2 forms

Two notes on these counts. First, they include the 2 unscored pretest questions in each module, since our records do not mark which questions were pretest. Second, other prep sites guess lower. UWorld says "most students can expect to see 3-5 inference questions," and Magoosh says "Around 4." Neither shows its data. Our median was 5.

Are there more inference questions in Module 2?

Yes, in our data. Module 1 averaged 2.07 inference questions, and Module 2 averaged 3.37. College Board says the second module "will either be more difficult or less difficult," based on how you did on the first one. Our records do not tell us which Module 2 path each version was, so read this as an average across both paths.

Inference questions also rate as hard. Of the 385 inference questions in our 142 modules, 203 were rated Hard, 177 Intermediate, and only 5 Easy. Those 5 Easy questions are 1.3% of the total, the lowest Easy share of all ten Reading and Writing skills in our sample. Cross-Text Connections came next at 5.3%. In our banks, 382 of 565 inference questions were rated Hard.

What does an SAT inference question look like?

It ends with a blank. You read a short passage, 25 to 150 words, that stops mid-sentence. The stem in College Board's own sample is "Which choice most logically completes the text?" You pick the ending that the passage supports.

The right answer is the one the text backs up, even if another choice sounds smarter. College Board's sample shows how this works. The key follows from what scientists in the passage "imply." College Board rejects two wrong choices because "the passage offers no evidence" for them.

Do not mix this up with Words in Context. Vocabulary questions also end in a blank, but their stem asks for "the most logical and precise word or phrase." Inference questions ask you to finish the idea. In College Board's sample, each answer choice is a full clause.

They sit in the second group of questions. College Board's Table 9 orders every Reading and Writing module the same way: Craft and Structure first, then Information and Ideas, then Standard English Conventions, then Expression of Ideas. Inside Information and Ideas, the framework says questions "are ordered first by skill/knowledge element and then by question difficulty from easiest to hardest." So inference questions come as a small group, after the vocabulary and structure questions and before grammar.

How do you get better at SAT inference questions?

Train the habit of stopping at what the text proves. These steps match the data above:

  1. Learn the pattern. Our guide to SAT inference questions walks through the method.
  2. Drill the skill. The free Logical Conclusions drill covers this exact question type. The Support the Claim drill and Main Idea drill cover the rest of the domain. All SkillDrill topics are free with a free account.
  3. Practice hard items under time. Since most inference questions rate Hard, practice with full question banks. Start with the free June 2026 Reading and Writing Question Bank (230 questions). Then move to the September 2026 Reading and Writing Question Bank (366 questions).
  4. Check your Module 2 route. Create a free account and take one full-length adaptive SAT section free, with a real Module 1 to Module 2 route and a scaled score.

Inference is one slice of the section. Grammar averaged 11.7 questions per form and vocabulary 8.5. See how many grammar questions are on the SAT, how many vocabulary questions are on the SAT, and the full digital SAT question count by type.

How we built this page

Official figures come from College Board's Assessment Framework for the Digital SAT Suite (Tables 9, 10 and 11 and its sample Inferences question), its Reading and Writing specifications and How the SAT Is Structured. Competitor figures come from UWorld and Magoosh, read on 2026-10-13. TTA figures come from read-only queries on our database: 142 complete 27-question modules (85 test versions, June 2023 to December 2025) and 22 English question banks (5,765 questions), counted by each question's College Board skill tag. College Board does not publish a count for single skills, so our counts are measured, not official. Verified 2026-10-13.
