The digital SAT has about 11 to 15 scored grammar questions. College Board calls them Standard English Conventions questions, and they make up about 26% of the 50 scored Reading and Writing questions. All of them sit in the Reading and Writing section, split across its two modules. The Math section has none.
Short answer from our data: we counted grammar questions on 57 two-module test forms in The Test Advantage's database. The average was 11.7 grammar questions out of 54, and 47 of the 57 forms had 11 or 12. To practice them, open the Digital SAT question bank, where the English banks group questions by domain.
How many grammar questions are on the SAT, according to College Board?
College Board gives a range, not one fixed number. Its Assessment Framework for the Digital SAT Suite (Table 10) puts Standard English Conventions at about 26% of scored questions, or 11 to 15 questions. The Reading and Writing specifications show the same 26% share.
That range counts scored questions only. Each Reading and Writing module has 27 questions: 25 count toward your score, and 2 are pretest questions that do not. College Board says pretest questions "appear the same as operational questions," so you cannot tell which ones they are. Treat every question as scored.

How many grammar questions did we count on SAT test forms?
Grammar is about a quarter of Reading and Writing. Create a free account and take one full-length adaptive SAT section free, with a Module 1 to Module 2 route and a scaled score.
Start 1-day free trial →We counted 11 or 12 on most forms. Our sample is 142 complete Reading and Writing modules (27 questions each) from 85 test versions in our database, labeled by SAT date from June 2023 to December 2025. In 57 of those versions, both modules were complete, so we could count the whole 54-question section.
- 10 grammar questions: 1 form
- 11 grammar questions: 23 forms
- 12 grammar questions: 24 forms
- 13 grammar questions: 8 forms
- 14 grammar questions: 1 form
Per module, the average was 5.9. Module 1 averaged 5.75 and Module 2 averaged 6.04, so grammar counts hold steady in the second module. Our counts include the 2 pretest questions in each module, because our records do not mark which questions were pretest.
Our share (about 22%) sits a little below College Board's 26% midpoint. Treat College Board's 11 to 15 as the rule. Our numbers show where the forms we counted land inside that range.
What do SAT grammar questions test?
Grammar questions test two skills. College Board names them Boundaries and Form, Structure, and Sense.
- Boundaries means punctuation that joins or separates parts of a sentence, so each sentence is "conventionally complete." On our 57 forms, this averaged 6.7 questions.
- Form, Structure, and Sense means usage, such as "agreement, verb tense/aspect," pronouns and modifiers. It averaged 5.1 questions per form.
Every grammar question uses the same stem: "Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?" You see a short passage with a blank and four choices.

We also sorted the grammar questions in our banks by topic. Verb questions led by a wide margin.
| Grammar topic | Share in 142 modules (837 questions) | Share in 22 banks (1,222 questions) | Free drill |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verbs (agreement, tense, form) | 32.5% | 33.0% | Verbs drill |
| Joining two complete sentences | 21.1% | 17.1% | Period, semicolon, or comma + FANBOYS |
| Extra information (commas, dashes, parentheses) | 10.5% | 9.4% | Extra information drill |
| Colons before a list or explanation | 7.0% | 7.4% | Colon drill |
| No punctuation needed | 6.5% | 6.5% | Boundaries unit |
| Pronouns, possessives and apostrophes | 6.9% | 9.0% | Pronouns drill |
| Modifiers | 3.6% | 4.6% | Modifiers drill |
The table leaves out smaller topics, such as items in a series, restrictive clauses and parallelism. So the shares do not add up to 100%.
Are transition and notes questions grammar questions?
No. College Board puts Transitions and Rhetorical Synthesis (the "notes" questions) in a different domain, Expression of Ideas. That domain covers about 20% of scored questions, or 8 to 12. Those questions test logic and purpose.
Many students call everything after the reading questions "grammar." If you count both domains, College Board's ranges add up to 19 to 27 of 50 scored questions. On our 57 forms, the two domains together averaged about 25 of 54. For the full breakdown of every question type, see how many questions are on the digital SAT, by type.
Where do grammar questions appear in each module?
They come third in each module, as one group. Table 9 of the Assessment Framework gives the same order for Module 1 and Module 2: Craft and Structure, then Information and Ideas, then Standard English Conventions, then Expression of Ideas. So you reach the grammar questions after the vocabulary and reading questions, and before transitions and notes.
Grammar has one twist. The Assessment Framework says Standard English Conventions questions "are ordered from easiest to hardest irrespective of skill/knowledge element tested." A verb question can follow a semicolon question. Do not expect all punctuation questions in a row.
In our 142 modules, grammar questions were rated 112 Easy, 454 Intermediate and 271 Hard. Over half are mid-level.
How should you practice SAT grammar questions?
Practice by topic first, then mix the topics. A plan that matches the counts above looks like this:
- Learn the rules. Read the SAT grammar rules cheat sheet once. It covers the rules behind these topics.
- Drill your weakest topic. Start with verbs and joining sentences, since they made up about half of the grammar questions we counted. Every SkillDrill topic is free with a free account.
- Mix the topics. Work the free June 2026 Reading and Writing Question Bank (230 questions). Then try a newer one, such as the October 2026 Reading and Writing Question Bank (300 questions).
- Test it under time. Create a free account and take one full-length adaptive SAT section free, with a real Module 1 to Module 2 route and a scaled score.
Grammar is one part of the section. Inference questions show up about 5 times per form, and vocabulary questions about 8 times. See how many inference questions are on the SAT and how many vocabulary questions are on the SAT. Every bank is listed in our practice test catalog.
How we built this page
Official figures come from College Board's Assessment Framework for the Digital SAT Suite (Tables 10 and 14), its Reading and Writing specifications, its Reading and Writing section page and How the SAT Is Structured. TTA figures come from read-only queries on our own database: 142 complete 27-question modules (85 test versions, June 2023 to December 2025) and 22 English question banks (5,765 questions), counted by each question's College Board skill tag. College Board does not publish a count for single skills, so our counts are measured, not official. Verified 2026-10-13.
