College Board does not publish how many vocab questions are on the SAT. Vocabulary questions are called Words in Context, and they belong to the Craft and Structure domain, which has 13 to 15 scored questions (about 28% of Reading and Writing). On 57 full test forms in our database, we counted 8.5 Words in Context questions on average, out of 54.
Short answer: expect about 8 or 9 vocabulary questions per test, or about 4 per module. 40 of our 57 forms had 8 or 9. Each one asks for a single word or short phrase that fits a blank. To practice them, open the Digital SAT question bank and work the vocabulary questions in the English banks.

College Board publishes a count for the domain only. Its Assessment Framework for the Digital SAT Suite puts Craft and Structure at about 28% of scored questions, or 13 to 15. That domain tests three skills:
- Words in Context: "determine the meaning of a high-utility academic word or phrase in context or use such vocabulary in a precise, contextually appropriate way."
- Text Structure and Purpose: explain how a text is built or what it is for.
- Cross-Text Connections: connect two short texts on the same topic.
So the 13 to 15 covers all three skills. PrepScholar's vocabulary page, for example, gives "approximately 13-15 questions total in this domain" when it explains how vocabulary is tested. Only part of that domain is vocabulary.

How many Words in Context questions did we count?
Most forms had 8 or 9. We looked at 142 complete Reading and Writing modules (27 questions each) from 85 test versions in our database, labeled by SAT date from June 2023 to December 2025. In 57 of those versions, both modules were complete. The 57 full forms broke down like this:
- 6 or 7 vocabulary questions: 8 forms
- 8 vocabulary questions: 24 forms
- 9 vocabulary questions: 16 forms
- 10 or 11 vocabulary questions: 9 forms
Module 1 averaged 4.36 vocabulary questions and Module 2 averaged 4.03, a change of less than half a question. Our counts include the 2 unscored pretest questions per module, because our records do not mark which ones were pretest. Our median of 8 is lower than the estimates from Magoosh and IvyStrides.

Start with a free mock, free drills, or preview sample questions before using all 45 question banks.
You get a short passage with one blank and four word choices. The stem in College Board's sample is "Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?" Passages run 25 to 150 words.
In that sample, the choices are jarring, scholarly, melodic and personal. The key is melodic, because the passage later describes "the same pleasant musical quality." The clue sits in the passage. Your job is to find it before you look at the choices.
What kind of words does the SAT test?
The SAT tests high-utility academic words. College Board says Words in Context questions "focus on high-utility academic, or tier two, words." Its examples of tier two words are "influence, produce, variety, exclusive, particular."
We checked the answer key of every Words in Context question in our 22 English banks:
- 877 vocabulary questions had 516 different correct answers.
- 102 of those answers were phrases, such as "incongruous with" or "proxies for," not single words.
- All 3,508 answer choices together used 1,833 different words and phrases.
Correct answers in our banks include rigor, palpable, discern, undermine, nominal and untenable. For a full study list, see our 1000 SAT words list, and read how many SAT vocabulary words you need to know.
Are SAT vocabulary questions easy points?
Of the 596 Words in Context questions in our 142 modules, 126 were rated Easy (21%), 279 Intermediate and 191 Hard (32%). Read the full sentence and find the clue before you choose.
Where do vocabulary questions appear in each module?
They sit in the first group. College Board's Table 9 orders every Reading and Writing module the same way: Craft and Structure, then Information and Ideas, then Standard English Conventions, then Expression of Ideas. Inside Craft and Structure, questions are grouped by skill and run from easiest to hardest. So your vocabulary questions come early in each module, as a set of about 4.

How we built this page
Official figures come from College Board's Assessment Framework for the Digital SAT Suite (Tables 9, 10 and 12, the sample Words in Context question, and the vocabulary section in chapter 5), its Reading and Writing specifications and its Reading and Writing section page. Competitor figures were read on 2026-10-13. TTA figures come from read-only queries on our database: 142 complete 27-question modules (85 test versions, June 2023 to December 2025), 22 English question banks (5,765 questions), and the answer choices of all 877 Words in Context questions in those banks. College Board does not publish a count for single skills, so our counts are measured, not official. Verified 2026-10-13.
