📚 The Rule: Understanding Domain 2

Function questions ask you to determine what a specific part of a passage does. Think of a passage as a machine with different parts. Each part has a specific job. Your task is to identify that job.

First, you must understand the passage's overall structure. Most passages follow patterns: they might present a common belief, then challenge it with new evidence. Or they might describe a phenomenon, then explain its causes. The underlined portion is just one piece of this larger structure.

To solve function questions, you need to answer two questions: What does this part say? And how does it relate to what comes before and after? The correct answer will accurately describe both the content AND its relationship to the rest of the text.

Never rely on what 'seems right.' Instead, treat this like a puzzle. Match the exact words in the answer choices to evidence in the text. If an answer says the text 'critiques' something, you should find criticism. If it says the text 'validates' something, you should find confirmation.

How to Attack These Questions:

  1. Step 1: Read the ENTIRE passage, not just the underlined part. Identify the main topic and overall flow of information.
  2. Step 2: Look at the underlined portion. Ask yourself: What information does this sentence provide? How does it connect to the sentences around it?
  3. Step 3: Test each answer choice against the text. Eliminate choices that describe something the text doesn't do or that misrepresent the relationship between parts.

Passage Context: The passage discusses psychology research. 'Autonomous motivation' means acting based on your own choices and values, not external pressure. 'Vitality' refers to feeling energized and alive.

🎯 The Practice Question

On receiving good news, people's first instinct might be to immediately share it, but a recent experiment suggests that keeping it a secret can be psychologically beneficial. Participants who kept good news secret reported feeling more energized than participants who shared it, perhaps because the choice to savor good news is a personal one and autonomous motivation is linked with vitality.

Which choice best describes the function of the underlined portion in the text as a whole?

A) It provides an observation about human behavior that was validated by the experiment summarized in the text.
B) It indicates a reason why skepticism about the conclusions mentioned in the text is likely warranted.
C) It reports the main conclusion of a study into a social phenomenon whose methodology is critiqued in the text.
D) It presents a scenario whose psychological impact was investigated in the study summarized in the text.

✅ The Correct Answer

The underlined portion states a common human behavior: when people get good news, their first instinct is to share it. The very next sentence introduces a 'recent experiment' that examines this behavior. The experiment's findings (that keeping secrets can be beneficial) relate directly to this initial observation. Therefore, the underlined portion presents an observation that the subsequent experiment explores and provides new information about. It sets up what the study investigated.

Choice B: The text shows no skepticism about the study's conclusions. It presents the findings matter-of-factly without critique.

🩺 Diagnosis: Study how to identify tone and authorial stance; you missed that the text presents findings without skepticism.

Choice C: The underlined portion is NOT the main conclusion. The main conclusion comes later: that keeping news secret can be beneficial. The text also does not critique the study's methodology.

🩺 Diagnosis: Practice distinguishing between background information and main conclusions in scientific passages.

Choice D: While close, this is imprecise. The underlined portion describes a general 'instinct' or behavior, not a specific 'scenario' that was investigated. The study investigated the psychological impact of acting on or against that instinct.

🩺 Diagnosis: Work on precise vocabulary; you confused a general observation with a specific test scenario.

⚠️ Anatomy of the Trap

The Global Trap: The global trap for function questions is reading the underlined portion in isolation. Wrong answers often correctly describe what the sentence SAYS but incorrectly describe how it FUNCTIONS within the whole passage.

In this exact question: The specific trap here is answer D. It sounds plausible because the observation is related to what was studied. But it uses the slightly wrong word 'scenario' instead of 'observation' or 'behavior,' making it technically incorrect.
