A Pro's Analysis of the Hard Module 2 Vocab from the September International SAT
Last Updated: September 14, 2025
If you are reading this, you probably felt the shift. You scored high on the first Reading and Writing module, and the Digital SAT moved you into the harder Module 2. The questions became denser, the vocabulary more subtle, and the reasoning more exacting. The Reddit threads for the Digital SAT September International 2025 test are alive with discussion about these specific questions for a reason. They are built to separate strong scores from top scores. The September 2025 SAT Reddit: Hard Vocab Module 2 Breakdown shows exactly where students got stuck.
This is where generic prep and rule-of-thumb advice fail. You cannot guess your way to a correct answer here. You need a logical method. For 12 years, I have taught students that every hard question has a straightforward logical core. I built The Test Advantage to give you the tools to find it.

The System for Hard Vocab: "Context Clue Isolation"
The method stays the same even when the words get harder. The SAT still has to give you the definition inside the sentence. For more work on the toughest questions, use Targeted Practice on vocabulary.
- Isolate the Clue: Find the exact phrase that defines what the blank does.
- Define the Mission: In your own words, decide what the missing word must mean or do.
- Execute and Eliminate: Pick the one choice that matches your mission perfectly.
Question 1: The Sterilized Soil Question (Correct Answer: D)
The Premise: Researchers took pots of sterile soil and added live microbes from different places to see how they would affect plant growth.
The sentence: "Noah Fierer and colleagues ________ pots of sterilized soil with slurries of live microbes collected from soil in five sites..."
The Analysis:
- Isolate the Clue: The clue is the entire action: they are adding something ("live microbes") to a previously empty or sterile environment ("sterilized soil").
- Define the Mission: The blank must mean "to fill with" or "to introduce a population into."
- The Takedown:
- (A) sanitized: This means to make clean and hygienic. They are doing the exact opposite by adding microbes.
- (B) precluded: Means to prevent from happening. This is the opposite of the action taken.
- (C) estimated: Means to roughly calculate. They were not estimating the pots; they were physically adding something to them.
- (D) populated: Means to form the population of a town, area, or country. In a biological context, it means to fill an environment with a species. This is a perfect match for adding microbes to sterile soil. This is the correct answer.

Question 2: The Collectibles Market Question (Correct Answer: B)

The Premise: This question states that the collectibles market is hard to understand, using the surprising price surge of G.I. Joe figures as an example. This type of question appears often on the Digital SAT, where students must analyze context clues to find the right fit.
The sentence: "The collectibles market is one of the most difficult segments of the consumer economy to _______. Few economists would have predicted, for example, that the prices... would soar..."
The Analysis:
- Isolate the Clue: The word "example" is key. The G.I. Joe story is an example of what is difficult to do. What was the example? That "Few economists would have predicted" the price surge.
- Define the Mission: The blank must mean "to predict" or "to know the future of."
- The Takedown:
- (A) exchange: People exchange collectibles all the time. That is not the difficult part.
- (B) forecast: Means to predict or estimate a future event or trend. This is a perfect synonym for "predict." This is the correct answer.
- (C) avoid: While some may want to avoid the market, the sentence is about the difficulty of understanding it as a system, not avoiding it personally.
- (D) monitor: It is easy to monitor prices; you can just look them up. The difficulty is in knowing what they will do next.
Question 3: The Hawthorne Effect Question (Correct Answer: B)
The Premise: This question describes the Hawthorne effect and then presents a reason why some researchers think it cannot be proven.
The sentence: "...researchers have claimed to invalidate this phenomenon, positing that the Hawthorne effect cannot be _________ because attempts to detect it invariably involve faulty research methods."
The Analysis:
- Isolate the Clue: The word "because" provides the key. The structure is: "The effect cannot be [BLANK] *because* the research used to find it is always faulty."
- Define the Mission: If the only evidence for something is based on bad methods, what can you not do? You cannot prove it, confirm it, or provide solid evidence for it. The blank must mean "proven true" or "verified."
- The Takedown:
- (A) rectified: Means to put something right or correct. You do not "correct" an effect.
- (B) substantiated: Means to provide evidence to support or prove the truth of. This is a perfect match for "proven true" or "verified." If the methods are faulty, you cannot substantiate the effect. This is the correct answer.
- (C) inculcated: Means to instill an idea by persistent instruction. This has nothing to do with proving a phenomenon.
- (D) hypothesized: Means to put forward as a hypothesis. The effect is already a hypothesis. The problem is about proving it.

Question 4: The Dinosaur Breathing Question (Correct Answer: B)
The Premise: Paleontologists think some dinosaurs breathed using structures similar to those in modern birds, which is why they use birds to study them.
The sentence: "Such structures are found in modern birds, which is why some paleontologists treat the respiratory systems of birds as ___ those of Ornithomimus... and other... sauropods."
The Analysis:
- Isolate the Clue: The clue is the logical relationship. Scientists are studying an extinct animal's system. They cannot observe it directly. So they use a similar system from a modern animal to study it indirectly. This is a classic setup for a hard vocabulary question on the Digital SAT.
- Define the Mission: The blank must mean "a substitute for," "a model for," or "something that stands in for the real thing."
- The Takedown:
- (A) harbingers of: A harbinger is something that signals the approach of another. Birds are not signals of dinosaurs; they are modern descendants used for study.
- (B) proxies for: A proxy is a figure that can be used to represent the value of something in a calculation; a stand-in or substitute. This perfectly describes using a modern bird's system to study an ancient one. This is the correct answer.
- (C) emissaries for: An emissary is a diplomat or representative. Birds are not diplomats for dinosaurs.
- (D) subordinates of: A subordinate is a person under the authority of another. This describes a power hierarchy, not a scientific model relationship.
This Is the Kind of Logic Our Secret Tests Are Built On.
This is the level of thinking required for a top score. It is not about memorizing words. It is about breaking down the logic of the sentence under pressure. The only way to get good at it is to practice on questions that are just as hard and just as cleverly designed. The four Bluebook tests are not enough.
I built The Test Advantage to close that gap. Our secret tests are engineered by experts to replicate the experience of a hard adaptive module. We are the only prep company on the market that obsesses over these psychological traps. For more practice on these reasoning traps, use Targeted Practice.
