A 1400 on the SAT is the 93rd percentile for recent SAT takers and the 97th percentile for all U.S. 11th and 12th graders, per College Board's percentile table. That means about 93% of recent test takers scored 1400 or lower. A 1400 also matches an ACT Composite of 31.
Short answer: what percentile is a 1400 on the SAT? The 93rd among recent SAT takers, or the 97th among all U.S. 11th and 12th graders. A 1400 is at the 93rd percentile in College Board's user group and the 97th percentile in its nationally representative group. Both come from College Board's SAT percentile table.
College Board defines a percentile rank as "the percentage of students with scores equal to or lower than their score." So a 93rd percentile score means about 93 of every 100 students in that group scored 1400 or lower.
Why are there two percentiles for a 1400?
College Board compares your score with two different groups:
- User group: "based on the actual SAT scores of students that graduated in the past three school years." These are real SAT takers. A 1400 is the 93rd percentile here.
- Nationally representative group: "derived from a research study of U.S. students in 11th and 12th grade," weighted to represent all of them "regardless of whether they typically take the SAT." A 1400 is the 97th percentile here.
Your official score report also compares you with real SAT takers. College Board's Fall 2026 Understanding Scores guide says the report shows an "All Tester Percentile," based on "the actual scores of the past 3 cohorts of students who took the SAT in 12th grade for tests completed anywhere in the world."
Some prep sites list a 1400 at the 94th percentile. College Board's table, checked on October 13, 2026, shows the 93rd.
What percentile are the scores near 1400?
Near 1400, percentiles climb slowly. From 1350 to 1450, the user group percentile rises from 89 to 95. Each score below links to its own score page:

College Board's What Is a Good Score? page puts the line for the top 10% lower: "A score of 1350 or higher is in the top 10% of SAT test takers."
How many students score 1400 or higher?
About 9% of the class of 2026. College Board's 2026 SAT annual report counts 167,152 students who scored 1400 to 1600, out of 1,954,833 in the class of 2026. The report uses each student's most recent score.
| Class of 2026 measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Students who took the SAT | 1,954,833 |
| Average total score | 1045 |
| Middle score (50th percentile) | 1030 |
| 75th percentile score | 1220 |
| Scored 1400 to 1600 | 167,152 (9%) |
| Scored exactly 1600 | 691 (0.04%) |
A 1400 is 355 points above the class of 2026 average of 1045. The 9% share is for one class. The 93rd percentile comes from three recent classes, so the two numbers line up but do not match exactly.
What section scores make a 1400?
Your total is your Reading and Writing score plus your Math score. Any pair that adds to 1400 works. Here are three possible splits with College Board's section percentiles (user group):
| Reading and Writing | Math | R&W percentile | Math percentile |
|---|---|---|---|
| 750 | 650 | 98 | 84 |
| 700 | 700 | 92 | 91 |
| 650 | 750 | 84 | 95 |
A 700 in Math is the 91st percentile and a 700 in Reading and Writing is the 92nd. The same section score can rank a little differently in each section.
On the Digital SAT, high section scores and the harder second module go together in practice. College Board's test structure page says the second module "will either be more difficult or less difficult" based on how you did on the first. In TTA's adaptive practice, every section that scored 700 or higher came from the harder module: 178 Reading and Writing sections and 35 Math sections out of 584 completed sections (May 17 to October 13, 2026). These are TTA practice scores, not official ones.
Is a 1400 a good SAT score?
Yes. A 1400 is at or above the scores of about 93% of recent SAT takers. TTA's 1400 score page rates it "Excellent," using a fixed rule: the 90th percentile or higher in the user group.
Whether it is good enough depends on your colleges. TTA's College Finder page for a 1400 SAT lists 20 matching universities from the U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard data. Our guide to what colleges accept a 1400 SAT score goes deeper.
What is a 1400 SAT in ACT terms?
A 1400 SAT matches an ACT Composite of 31. That comes from the official 2018 SAT and ACT concordance tables, which researchers from College Board and ACT developed together. In the same table, 1410 and 1390 also match 31, and 1420 matches 32. See the 1400 SAT to ACT page for nearby scores.
How do you raise a 1400 to a higher percentile?
Move one section at a time. Going from 1400 to 1450 moves you from the 93rd to the 95th percentile in the user group. A 1500 is the 97th.
