To get a 1500 on the SAT, aim for about 750 in Reading and Writing and 750 in Math. A 1500 is the 97th percentile among recent SAT takers, per College Board. Find the question types you still miss, drill them at the hardest level, and cut careless errors in Module 1.

A 1500 means you scored higher than about 97% of recent SAT takers. College Board reports two percentiles. The user group is real SAT takers from the past three graduating classes. The nationally representative group stands for all U.S. 11th and 12th graders, including students who never take the SAT.
| Total score | User group percentile | Nationally representative percentile | ACT composite (official concordance) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1300 | 85 | 91 | 28 |
| 1400 | 93 | 97 | 31 |
| 1450 | 95 | 99 | 33 |
| 1500 | 97 | 99 | 34 |
| 1550 | 99 | 99+ | 35 |
Percentiles are from College Board's SAT percentile tables. ACT matches are from the official ACT and SAT concordance tables. Check any score on our SAT percentiles tool or the Is 1500 a good SAT score? page.
Going from 1400 to 1500 moves you four percentile points in the user group, from 93 to 97. Few students score this high, so plan for small, steady gains.
What section scores add up to a 1500?
Each section is scored from 200 to 800. A 1500 can come from an even split or a lopsided one. The table ranks each section score in College Board's user group.
| Split | Reading and Writing percentile | Math percentile | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 750 R&W + 750 Math | 98 | 95 | Students who are strong in both sections |
| 700 R&W + 800 Math | 92 | 99+ | Math students who can stop missing math questions |
| 800 R&W + 700 Math | 99+ | 91 | Readers with near-perfect grammar and reading |
An 800 leaves no room for error in that section. We suggest 750 and 750 as the default target.
How many questions can you get wrong for a 1500?
College Board does not publish a fixed number. The Digital SAT is scored with Item Response Theory, which weighs which questions you got right, including how hard they were. College Board says "two students who answer the same number of questions correctly in a test section may earn differing section scores." That is on its How Are Scores Calculated? page.

Treat any "you can only miss 4" rule as a guess. College Board publishes no such cutoff. For a rough estimate from your correct answers per module, use our Digital SAT score calculator. Treat its number as an estimate, not a promise.
Why does Module 1 matter so much for a 1500?
Each section has two modules. Module 1 has a mix of easy, medium and hard questions. Then "the second module of questions will either be more difficult or less difficult," based on how you did, per College Board's structure page.
College Board says a range of scores is possible on either second module, and it does not publish the routing cutoff. College Board picks your second module from your Module 1 work, so a 1500 student cannot give away easy points early. Slow down on Module 1, check each answer, and use the full 32 or 35 minutes.
How to get a 1500 on the SAT: a plan for 1350 to 1450 scorers
- Take a full-length, scored baseline. College Board calls a Bluebook practice test "the best and most accurate way" to measure your skills. A free The Test Advantage account also includes one full-length adaptive test with a likely score range.
- Sort every miss by cause. Mark each one as a concept gap, a misread, a careless slip or a time problem. Fix the slips and misreads too, not only the concepts.
- Go straight to hard questions. Filter practice to the Hard level. College Board's free Student Question Bank filters by domain, skill and difficulty. In The Test Advantage's October 2026 SAT Math Question Bank, 37 of the 106 questions are tagged Hard.
- Drill the exact skill behind each hard miss. Use the drill table below. Work up to the top level of each drill.
- Get fast with Desmos. Bluebook includes a Desmos calculator on the SAT, per its testing tools page. Practice graphing systems, parabolas and circles on our Desmos for the Digital SAT page.
- Time single modules. 32 minutes for 27 Reading and Writing questions. 35 minutes for 22 Math questions. Finish with time to check.
- Retest no more than every two weeks. College Board suggests spacing practice tests at least two weeks apart. Review every miss before you take the next one.
Which skill drills cover the hardest topics?
These free lesson notes each teach one skill, and a free account opens them. For more hard questions, see the Digital SAT question banks.
| Hard topic | Free lesson notes |
|---|---|
| Number of solutions, absolute value, matching terms | Solution Counts, Matching Terms and Absolute Value Equations |
| Shifting and stretching graphs | Function Transformations |
| Exponential models | Growth Factors, Doubling Time and Linear vs Exponential |
| Circles and radians | Circles and Radian Measure |
| Rhetorical synthesis (notes questions) | Rhetorical Synthesis |
| Cross-text and structure | Cross-Text Connections and Text Structure |

Where can you find more hard practice questions?
Start with the free official sets: Bluebook full-length tests, the Student Question Bank and Official SAT Prep on Khan Academy, which includes an Advanced level for every skill. When you run low on new questions, our SAT Question Bank hub groups Digital SAT question banks by test month, with separate English and Math banks. The June 2026 Reading and Writing Question Bank is free with an account.
How long does it take to go from 1400 to 1500?
No official source sets a number of hours. Your time depends on how many hard question types you still miss. Put your test date and weekly hours into our free SAT Study Plan Generator. It builds a week-by-week schedule from a diagnostic week to a final review week. If you upload your College Board score report, it shifts more hours to your lower section.
This sample fits a student at about 1420 who plans to test on March 6, 2027, about 20 weeks away. The registration deadline is February 19, 2027, per College Board's dates page.
| Weeks | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Baseline | Full-length test. Sort misses by domain and cause. |
| 2 to 8 | Hard skill building | Two weakest domains first. Drills at the top level, then Hard bank questions. |
| 9 | Retest | Full-length test. Update your list of weak question types. |
| 10 to 16 | Speed and accuracy | Timed modules. Desmos shortcuts. Error log every session. |
| 17 to 19 | Full tests | One full-length test every two weeks, with full review. |
| 20 | Review | Redo every missed question. No new topics. |
For more on weekly time, see how many hours you should study for the SAT.
What stops strong students from reaching 1500?
- Easy-question slips. Missing an easy Module 1 question can change which second module you get. Check every answer.
- Too little hard practice. Once you score near 1450, spend most of your practice time on Hard questions.
- Retesting without review. A full test you do not review only measures you. It does not raise your score.
- Running out of time in Math. College Board's math pacing works out to about 1 minute and 35 seconds per question, per its Math specifications. Use Desmos where it is faster than algebra.
- Leaving a question blank. College Board says it is better to guess than to leave a question blank.

Frequently Asked Questions
What percentile is a 1500 on the SAT?
A 1500 is the 97th percentile in College Board's user group of recent SAT takers and the 99th percentile in its nationally representative group of U.S. 11th and 12th graders.
How many questions can you get wrong for a 1500?
College Board does not publish a fixed number. The Digital SAT uses Item Response Theory, so two students with the same number of correct answers can earn different section scores. A 1500 leaves very little room for misses, so aim for near-perfect accuracy on easy and medium questions.
What section scores make a 1500?
Any pair that adds up to 1500. The most common target is 750 Reading and Writing plus 750 Math. A 700 plus 800 split works too, but an 800 leaves no room for error in that section.
Do you need the harder second module to get a 1500?
College Board says a range of section scores is possible on either second module and does not publish the routing cutoff. The second module is chosen from your Module 1 performance, so careful work on Module 1 matters at this level.
What ACT score equals a 1500 SAT?
The official ACT and SAT concordance tables match a 1500 SAT to a 34 ACT composite.
What is the best way to practice for a 1500?
Take a scored full-length test, sort every miss by cause, then spend most of your time on Hard questions filtered by domain. Use the College Board Student Question Bank, Khan Academy's Advanced level, Bluebook tests, and free topic drills, and retest no more than every two weeks.
