Quick Answer

To get a 1400 on the SAT, aim for about 700 in Reading and Writing and 700 in Math. A 1400 is the 93rd percentile among recent SAT takers, per College Board. Take one full practice test, find your two weakest content domains, drill them, then practice timed modules until both sections hold near 700.

Read it. Then test it.

A 1400 means you scored higher than about 93% of recent SAT takers. College Board reports two kinds of percentiles. The user group is real SAT takers from the past three graduating classes. The nationally representative group is weighted to stand for all U.S. 11th and 12th graders.

Total scoreUser group percentileNationally representative percentileACT composite (official concordance)
1200758125
1300859128
1400939731

Percentiles come from College Board's SAT percentile tables. ACT matches come from the official ACT and SAT concordance tables. You can look up any other score on our SAT percentiles tool or the Is 1400 a good SAT score? page.

What section scores add up to a 1400?

Each section is scored from 200 to 800, and the two add up to your total. You do not need 700 and 700. Pick the split that fits your strengths. The same College Board tables rank each section score:

SplitReading and Writing percentile (user group)Math percentile (user group)Best for
700 R&W + 700 Math9291Students who are even across both sections
750 R&W + 650 Math9884Strong readers who find math slower
650 R&W + 750 Math8495Strong math students who lose points on grammar or reading

Start with the section that is further from its target. Your plan should give it more of your weekly time until the gap closes.

How many questions can you miss and still get a 1400?

There is no fixed number. College Board scores the Digital SAT with a method called Item Response Theory. It weighs which questions you got right, including how hard they were. In College Board's words, "two students who answer the same number of questions correctly in a test section may earn differing section scores." You can read this on College Board's How Are Scores Calculated? page.

Be careful with any page that says "miss 8 and you get a 1400." That is a guess, not a College Board rule. For a rough estimate, enter your correct answers per module in our Digital SAT score calculator. Treat the result as an estimate. A scored, full-length practice test tells you more.

Two more facts from the same page matter here. First, each module has two pretest questions that do not count. Second, College Board says it is better to guess than to leave a question blank.

How does the adaptive test affect a 1400?

The SAT has two sections: Reading and Writing (54 questions, 64 minutes) and Math (44 questions, 70 minutes). Each section has two modules. The first module has a mix of easy, medium and hard questions. Based on how you do, the second module is "either more difficult or less difficult," per College Board's test structure page.

College Board also says "a range of section scores are possible no matter which second module a student sees." It does not publish the cutoff for the harder module. Treat Module 1 as the place to earn every point you know how to earn. A careless miss there costs you twice: it lowers your number correct, and it can send you to the easier second module.

How to get a 1400 on the SAT: the step-by-step plan

The plan starts from your baseline, so your time goes to the domains where you lose points.

  1. Take one full-length baseline test. College Board calls a Bluebook practice test "the best and most accurate way" to measure your skills. You can also make a free The Test Advantage account and take one full-length adaptive test with a likely score range.
  2. Pick your split. Use the table above. Write down a target for each section, such as 680 and 720.
  3. Find your two weakest domains. Your score report shows how you did in each of the eight content domains, four per section, per College Board's Understanding Scores guide. Circle the two lowest. Those two domains are your first study targets.
  4. Learn one skill at a time. Free lesson notes teach one skill at a time. Start with the matching lesson notes in the table below.
  5. Practice bank questions by difficulty. Work medium and hard questions from a question bank, sorted by domain. Check every miss and write down why you missed it.
  6. Do timed modules. Practice one module at a time: 32 minutes for 27 Reading and Writing questions, or 35 minutes for 22 Math questions.
  7. Retest every two weeks or more. College Board recommends spacing practice tests at least two weeks apart. Only retest after you have fixed the errors from the last one.

How long does it take to get a 1400?

It depends on your starting score and your weekly hours. No official source gives a set number of hours. The fastest way to get a real answer is to plug your test date and weekly hours into our free SAT Study Plan Generator. It builds a week-by-week schedule from today to test day. It starts with a diagnostic week and ends with a review week.

This sample fits a student at about 1280 who tests on December 5, 2026, seven and a half weeks from today. The registration deadline is November 20, per College Board's test dates page.

2 to 3Weakest domainOne lesson a day, then 15 bank questions in that domain.
4Second-weakest domainSame routine. Add two timed modules.
5RetestFull-length test. Compare domain results with week 1.
6 to 7Mixed hard practiceMedium and hard bank questions, timed modules, error log review.

If you need more time, the next dates are March 6, 2027 and May 1, 2027. For more on weekly hours, see how many hours you should study for the SAT.

What mistakes keep students stuck below 1400?

  • Taking test after test. A new test without review repeats the same errors. Review first, then retest.
  • Studying only the strong section. Give the weaker section more of your weekly hours until it reaches its target.
  • Rushing Module 1. Module 1 sets up your second module. Slow down enough to check the easy ones.
  • Skipping Desmos practice. Bluebook gives you a built-in Desmos calculator on the SAT, per its testing tools page. Learn it before test day on our Desmos for the Digital SAT page.
  • Leaving blanks. College Board says it is better to guess than to leave a question blank.

Frequently Asked Questions

What percentile is a 1400 on the SAT?

A 1400 is the 93rd percentile in College Board's user group (recent SAT takers) and the 97th percentile in its nationally representative group of U.S. 11th and 12th graders.

What section scores add up to a 1400?

Any pair that sums to 1400 works. Common splits are 700 Reading and Writing plus 700 Math, 750 plus 650, or 650 plus 750. Pick the split that fits your stronger section, then set a target for each section.

How many questions can you miss and still get a 1400?

There is no fixed number. College Board scores the Digital SAT with Item Response Theory, so two students with the same number of correct answers can earn different section scores. Use a scored full-length practice test, or an estimate from a score calculator, instead of a miss count.

Do you need the harder Module 2 to get a 1400?

College Board says a range of section scores is possible no matter which second module you see, and it does not publish the routing cutoff. Strong accuracy in Module 1 matters, because the second module is chosen from your Module 1 performance.

What is a 1400 SAT in ACT terms?

The official ACT and SAT concordance tables match a 1400 SAT to a 31 ACT composite.

How long does it take to go from 1300 to 1400?

No official source sets a number of hours. It depends on your starting domain scores and weekly time. Enter your test date and weekly hours in The Test Advantage's free SAT Study Plan Generator to get a week-by-week schedule.
