Quick Answer

To get a 1200 on the SAT, aim for about 600 in Reading and Writing and 600 in Math. A 1200 is the 75th percentile of recent test takers, per College Board. Find your baseline with a practice test, do well enough in Module 1 to reach the harder Module 2, then fix your weakest skills.

Read it. Then test it.

This article explains the skill. TTA shows whether you can use it under exam timing.

Build My Plan Why it works: you start with a full timed task, see the gap, then drill the exact skill instead of guessing what to study.

To get a 1200 on the SAT, you need about 600 on Reading and Writing and 600 on Math, since your total is the two section scores added together. A 1200 beats about 75% of recent test takers, per College Board's percentile table. The plan: find your baseline, reach the harder Module 2, and fix your weakest skills first.

Short answer: how to get a 1200 on the SAT comes down to three things. Get enough of Module 1 right to be sent to the harder second module. Learn the skills that cost you the most points. Then practice under real timing. To see where a 1200 sits next to every other score, use our What Is a Good SAT Score tool. A 1200 is above average. College Board's percentile table puts a 1200 at the 75th percentile of its user group and the 81st percentile of its nationally representative group.

Those two groups mean different things. The user group is "students that graduated in the past three school years" who took the SAT. The nationally representative group is weighted "to represent all U.S. students" in 11th and 12th grade, "regardless of whether they typically take the SAT." The user group compares you with other SAT takers.

The latest national results come from College Board's 2026 SAT annual report for the class of 2026:

Measure (class of 2026)Value
Students who took the SAT1,954,833
Average total score1045
Average Reading and Writing score528
Average Math score517
75th percentile total score1220
Students scoring 1200 to 1390377,381 (19%)
Students scoring 1400 to 1600167,152 (9%)

Add the last two rows and about 28% of the class of 2026 scored 1200 or higher. A 1200 is 155 points above the class average of 1045. The report counts each student's most recent score.

A 1200 also lines up with an ACT Composite of 25 on the official 2018 SAT and ACT concordance tables. For a quick verdict and nearby scores, see Is 1200 a good SAT score?

What section scores add up to a 1200?

Any pair of section scores that adds to 1200 works. Each section runs from 200 to 800. An even 600 and 600 is one route, but you can lean on your stronger section.

Source: College Board section percentile table (user group). A 600 in Math sits at the 75th percentile, and a 600 in Reading and Writing at the 72nd.

For comparison, College Board's "college and career readiness" benchmarks are 480 in Reading and Writing and 530 in Math, per its scoring page. A 600 in each section clears both.

There is no fixed number. College Board's scoring page says "two students who answer the same number of questions correctly in a test section may earn differing section scores," because the difficulty of the questions you get right also counts.

The Digital SAT has 54 Reading and Writing questions and 44 Math questions, per College Board's test structure page. Each section has two modules.

TTA's own practice data gives a rough guide. Across 30 adaptive Reading and Writing sections that scored 590 to 610 in our practice tests, the median was 37 of 54 questions right, with a range of 35 to 44. These are TTA practice scores from our scoring model, not official SAT scores. We do not show a Math figure because only 3 Math sections landed in that range.

Why does Module 2 matter for a 1200?

Module 2 matters because it depends on Module 1, and in TTA's practice data the route tracks the score. College Board's test structure page says "based on how you perform on the first module, the second module of questions will either be more difficult or less difficult."

College Board also says "a range of section scores are possible no matter which second module a student sees." It does not publish a top score for the easier route.

In TTA's adaptive practice, the route made a big difference. These are 584 completed practice sections from May 17 to October 13, 2026, with staff accounts removed:

TTA practice sectionsReading and WritingMath
Completed sections482102
Scored 600 or higher29066
Of those, on the harder Module 228864
Highest score on the easier Module 2600600

In our practice scoring, 288 of 290 Reading and Writing sections at 600 or higher came from the harder second module. No Reading and Writing section with less than 63% of Module 1 right reached the harder module. Some sections with up to 78% right still went to the easier one, so aim well above that line. These are practice results from TTA's own model, not College Board rules.

  1. Find your baseline. College Board's study plan page calls a Bluebook practice test "the best and most accurate way" to measure your skills. You can also create a free TTA account and take one full-length adaptive SAT section free, with a real Module 1 to Module 2 route and a scaled score.
  2. Pick your split. Use the table above. If Math is your strong section, a 650 Math lets you get by with a 550 in Reading and Writing.
  3. Protect Module 1. College Board says how you do on Module 1 decides which second module you get. Check your work there before you move on.
  4. Fix one skill at a time. Your score report shows how you did in each content domain. Free lesson notes teach one Digital SAT skill at a time. Practice in the Digital SAT question banks, or start with the lesson notes on core topics such as systems of two linear equations, percent change, joining two complete sentences and main idea. A free account is needed to open them.
  5. Practice on Digital SAT-style questions. TTA's SAT Question Bank groups its Digital SAT question banks by test month, with separate English and Math banks for US and International forms. The June 2026 Reading and Writing Question Bank is free: try sample questions without an account, or make a free account to work the full bank. You can also try five sample questions from any test in the practice test catalog.
  6. Retest every two weeks. College Board recommends "spacing out your practice tests by at least two weeks if your study schedule allows." Check each new score with the Digital SAT score calculator and adjust.

How long does it take to get a 1200 on the SAT?

It depends on how far you start from 1200. College Board published a study on practice time in 2017. It found that 6 to 8 hours on Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy was "associated with an average 90-point increase," and 20 hours with 115 points, per College Board's 2017 announcement. That study measured gains from the PSAT/NMSQT to the SAT, years before the SAT went digital in March 2023. It shows a link, not a promise.

For a schedule, College Board's parent guide suggests starting two months before test day: take a full-length practice test, "then spend 15–30 minutes each day reviewing and completing additional practice activities." Take another full test two weeks before the real one.

To turn your own hours into a plan, use the free SAT Study Plan Generator. Enter your baseline, your 1200 target, your test date and your weekly hours. It builds a week-by-week schedule from a diagnostic week through skill building, mixed practice, full-length tests and a final review. Our guide on how many hours to study for the SAT goes deeper on time.

What colleges can you get into with a 1200?

Many. TTA's College Finder page for a 1200 SAT lists 20 matching universities from the U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard data, and 17 of the 20 have a published acceptance rate above 50%. Our guide to what colleges accept a 1200 SAT score covers this in more detail.

College Board's What Is a Good Score? page says "a good SAT score is one that helps you get admitted to a college you want to go to!"

What should you do after you reach 1200?

Decide whether to stop or push on. If your college list wants more, the next step is 1300, which is the 85th percentile on College Board's user table. Our 1200 to 1300 SAT study plan walks through that jump, and how to get a 1500 covers the top range. Check the next SAT dates on our SAT test dates page before you plan a retake.

How we built this page: Percentiles come from College Board's SAT percentile table on research.collegeboard.org (user group and nationally representative), fetched October 13, 2026. Class of 2026 results come from College Board's 2026 Total Group SAT Suite Annual Report. The ACT match comes from the official 2018 concordance tables. Test structure, scoring, benchmark and study-plan quotes come from College Board pages fetched the same day. TTA practice figures come from 584 completed adaptive practice sections on The Test Advantage (May 17 to October 13, 2026, staff accounts removed); they are practice scores from TTA's model, not official SAT scores.
