When Should You Not Use Desmos on SAT Math?

See more TTA in Google Search:

Quick Answer

Skip Desmos on SAT math when one line of arithmetic gives the answer, when the question asks about the form of an expression, when both sides of an equation simplify to the same thing, on geometry with no coordinate plane, and before you set up the equation. College Board says it builds some questions so a calculator does not help.

Read it. Then test it.

This article explains the skill. TTA shows whether you can use it under exam timing.

Knowing when not to use Desmos on SAT math frees up time for the questions where it helps: systems, graphs and data. Our free Desmos for the SAT hub has the same calculator Bluebook uses, a technique library, and its own "when not to use Desmos" checklist. Below are College Board's own words on the topic, three bank questions to time yourself on, and data on which question types reward working by hand.

Yes, in two places. College Board's calculator policy says: "The Math section includes some questions where it's better not to use a calculator, even though you're allowed to." The same page advises: "Get your thoughts down before using your calculator."

The Assessment Framework for the Digital SAT Suite (version 4, September 2026) explains why. Test developers check every question "to ensure that calculator use does not trivialize" it. They also "create some questions for which a calculator is either not needed or its use is not particularly beneficial to solving the problem." The goal, in College Board's words, is "strategic (rather than indiscriminate) use of the calculator."

You still have Desmos on every Math question. The framework says "a built-in Desmos calculator is available for the entire Math section," and you can switch between the graphing and scientific versions. Our sibling page answers whether Desmos is allowed on the SAT in full.

When not to use Desmos on SAT math: what are the six signs?

SignWhy Desmos slows you downDo this instead
1. One line of arithmetic gives the answerTyping takes longer than thinkingWrite the one line, such as "90% less means × 0.1"
2. The question asks about form ("which is a factor," "which is equivalent")A graph shows values, not the form of an expressionFactor or expand on paper
3. Both sides of an equation simplify to the same thingTwo identical lines sit on top of each other and look like one lineDistribute and compare both sides
4. Geometry with no coordinate planeThere is nothing to graphUse the figure, the reference sheet and a formula
5. A constant with no value (find the greatest n, the value of k)Sliders turn one step of algebra into guess-and-checkUse the discriminant or match coefficients first
6. You have not set up the equation yetDesmos solves what you type, not what the question asksWrite the equation on scratch paper, then check it in Desmos

Sign 6 is College Board's own advice from the calculator policy. Signs 1 to 5 come from question types in our banks. The three questions below show signs 2, 3 and 4.

All three carry a Hard label in our banks. We solved each one ourselves, and our answer matches the bank's key every time. Time yourself on each.

Question 1: Same expression on both sides (Hard)

How many solutions does the equation 4(x + 10) + 6x = 10(x + 4) have?

A) Exactly one
B) Exactly two
C) Infinitely many
D) Zero

Show the answer

C) Infinitely many. Distribute: the left side is 4x + 40 + 6x = 10x + 40. The right side is 10x + 40. The two sides are identical, so every x works. That takes about two lines. In Desmos, y = 4(x + 10) + 6x and y = 10(x + 4) draw the same line on top of itself. A student who expects two lines may read that as one intersection, choice A, or as nothing, choice D.

From the June 2026 SAT Math Question Bank (US). If you do want a calculator check for systems like this, see our guide to infinitely many solutions on Desmos.

Question 2: Which expression is a factor? (Hard)

Which expression is a factor of y2(x − 6) − 16(x − 6)3?

A) y(x − 6)
B) (x − 6)(x − 4)
C) y + x − 6
D) y + 4x − 24

Show the answer

D) y + 4x − 24. Pull out the common factor (x − 6): (x − 6)[y2 − 16(x − 6)2]. The bracket is a difference of squares: [y − 4(x − 6)][y + 4(x − 6)]. The second factor is y + 4x − 24. The expression has two variables, so a graph of it does not show its factors. Choice C forgets to take the square root of 16.

A circle has center P, and points A and B lie on the circle. The measure of arc AB is 30° and the length of arc AB is 7π units. What is the length, in units, of the radius of the circle?

Show the answer

42. A 30° arc is 30/360 = 1/12 of the circle. So the full circumference is 12 × 7π = 84π. Circumference is 2πr, so 2πr = 84π and r = 42. There is no equation or point to graph here. The reference sheet gives C = 2πr and the 360 degrees in a circle, which is all you need.

Which SAT question types reward working by hand?

We grouped the 3,989 questions in our 21 active SAT Math banks by category. The right column is our call on whether Desmos helps on most questions in each category. It is a judgment, not a measurement.

TTA categoryQuestionsHardOur Desmos call
Expressions and polynomials21756 (26%)Mostly by hand (form questions)
Number of solutions and extraneous solutions11883 (70%)By hand first, Desmos to check
Area, perimeter and volume203105 (52%)By hand (formulas)

Quadratic and nonlinear functions262115 (44%)Desmos helps (vertex, zeros)
Two-variable data and scatterplots8411 (13%)Desmos helps (regression)

The four geometry categories in the "by hand" rows hold 461 of our 3,989 questions, about 12%. Add expressions and polynomials and you reach 678, about 17%. These are our labels and tags, read from our database on October 13, 2026.

When should you use Desmos instead?

Use it when a graph gives you the answer. Systems of equations, the vertex or zeros of a parabola, inequalities and regression all fit. Our guides cover how to solve for x on Desmos, ratios and percentages on Desmos, and when to use regression on the SAT. For a full tour, read our complete guide to Desmos on the SAT, and for two worked examples of skipping it, see when to use Desmos on the September 2025 SAT.

How do you build the habit?

  1. Read the last line first. If it asks "which is equivalent" or "which is a factor," plan to work by hand.
  2. Set a 10-second check. Before you open Desmos, ask whether one line on scratch paper would finish the question.
  3. Practice in the question banks. Our Digital SAT question bank hub sorts each bank by domain, skill and difficulty. Try five sample questions from any test without an account in the practice test catalog.
  4. Test it under time. A free account (no card required) includes one full-length adaptive test.

How we built this page: the calculator quotes come from College Board's SAT Suite calculator policy page and section 5.3.2 of the Assessment Framework for the Digital SAT Suite, version 4 (September 2026). We fetched and checked both on October 13, 2026. The table of question types is a read-only query of The Test Advantage database run the same day over all 3,989 questions in our 21 active, public SAT Math banks. The "Desmos call" column is our own judgment. The three questions are ids 620454, 662867 and 618812. We solved each one on our own, and every answer matches the bank's key. The Test Advantage is not affiliated with College Board or Desmos.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does College Board say you should skip the calculator sometimes?

Yes. Its calculator policy says the Math section includes some questions where it is better not to use a calculator, even though you are allowed to, and advises getting your thoughts down before using it. The Assessment Framework says test developers create some questions for which a calculator is not needed or not particularly beneficial.

When not to use Desmos on SAT math: what are the six signs?

Six signs: one line of arithmetic gives the answer; the question asks which expression is equivalent or a factor; both sides of an equation simplify to the same thing; the geometry has no coordinate plane; the question has a constant with no value; or you have not set up the equation yet.

Which SAT question types reward working by hand?

In The Test Advantage's judgment, expressions and polynomials (217 bank questions), triangles (162), area and volume (203), lines and angles (64) and radian measure (32) usually go faster by hand. Together they are 678 of the 3,989 questions in our 21 SAT Math banks, about 17%.

When should you use Desmos instead?

Use Desmos when a graph gives you the answer: systems of equations, the vertex or zeros of a parabola, inequalities and regression. Desmos is built into Bluebook for the entire Math section, with graphing and scientific modes.
