The Digital SAT is shorter than the old paper SAT, but it is not an easier test. It takes 2 hours and 14 minutes and has 98 questions, while the paper test took 3 hours and had 154. Scores on the two tests mean the same thing. Module 2 gets harder only if you do well on Module 1.

Paper SAT vs Digital SAT: what changed
College Board compares the two formats side by side in Table A43 of its Assessment Framework for the Digital SAT Suite. Here are the SAT numbers from that table.
| What changed | Paper SAT (retired) | Digital SAT |
|---|---|---|
| Total time | 180 minutes | 134 minutes |
| Total questions | 154 | 98 |
| Average time per question | 1.17 minutes | 1.37 minutes |
| Reading and Writing | 100 minutes, 96 questions | 64 minutes in two 32-minute modules, 54 questions |
| Math | 80 minutes, 58 questions | 70 minutes in two 35-minute modules, 44 questions |
| Calculator | Separate no-calculator part | Allowed on all Math questions |
| How the test is given | Linear: everyone gets the same questions | Two-stage adaptive: Module 2 depends on Module 1 |
The College Board page How the SAT Is Structured gives the same totals: 64 minutes for Reading and Writing, 70 minutes for Math, "for a total of 2 hours and 14 minutes," with a 10-minute break between the sections.
Does shorter mean easier?

- The score scale did not move. The digital SAT is still scored from 400 to 1600, and College Board gives this example: "a score of 1050 on the digital SAT would correspond to and carry the same meaning as a score of 1050 on the paper and pencil SAT" (How Are Scores Calculated?). The framework adds that "colleges can assume the same relationships between scores and college readiness from both digital and paper and pencil SAT scores."
- Short passages keep the same level. The framework says the Reading and Writing passages are "significantly shorter and more numerous," and adds that "these shorter passages maintain the level of rigor of longer reading passages." Each passage now has one question.
- Math word problems are shorter, and the calculator is always allowed. The framework says the average length of in-context questions "has been reduced," and the Desmos calculator is built into Bluebook for the whole Math section. That saves time. It does not lower the level of the math.
College Board calls the digital format the "shortest and easiest testing experience possible." Read that as the testing experience: less time in the chair and a calculator on every question. The questions themselves are not easier.
How Module 2 routing works
Each section has two modules of equal length. College Board explains the route on How the SAT Is Structured: "The first module of each section contains a broad mix of easy, medium, and hard questions. Based on how you perform on the first module, the second module of questions will either be more difficult or less difficult."
The scoring page adds the size of each module: 20 to 25 scored questions plus "two pretest questions, which don't count for scoring." Bluebook picks your Module 2 from your Module 1 answers. Inside Module 1 you can go back and change answers, but when its time ends, Module 2 begins.
| Section | Module 1 | Module 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Reading and Writing | 32 minutes, a mix of easy, medium and hard | 32 minutes, harder or easier mix based on Module 1 |
| Math | 35 minutes, a mix of easy, medium and hard | 35 minutes, harder or easier mix based on Module 1 |
College Board has not published the cutoff that sends you to the harder module. To see how a real route looked on official practice tests, read our breakdowns of the adaptive branch on Practice Test 2 and Practice Test 3.

Is Module 2 harder than Module 1?
It depends on your route. If you do well on Module 1, your Module 2 is harder on average. If you struggle on Module 1, your Module 2 is easier on average. The framework describes the harder option as "a targeted mix of questions that are, on average, of higher difficulty than those in the first module," and notes that both options "include easy, medium-difficulty, and hard questions, albeit in differing proportions."
College Board's How to Use Bluebook Practice Tests page puts it in plain words: the second module "will be either slightly more difficult or slightly less difficult than the questions in the first module." So if Module 2 feels harder, that usually means Module 1 went well.
What the harder module means for your score
College Board says the route itself does not change your score: "Students won't be advantaged just for seeing a higher difficulty set of questions in the second module, or disadvantaged just for seeing a lower difficulty set of questions in the second module." It also says "a range of section scores are possible no matter which second module a student sees."
The SAT uses item response theory to score each section. Your score depends on which questions you got right and how hard they were, not only on how many. In College Board's words, "two students who answer the same number of questions correctly in a test section may earn differing section scores." Our page on whether the SAT is curved walks through what that means. For the full 400 to 1600 scale, see what the SAT is out of and how it is scored.
Two practical points follow from the scoring page. Your section score "is based on how they did on all of the questions in both modules," so every question in Module 1 counts. And College Board says "it's better to guess than leave a question blank."
How to prepare for the harder module
- Protect your Module 1 accuracy. Module 1 decides your route, and every Module 1 question counts toward your score. Check your work on the questions you know how to do before you spend extra time on the hardest ones.
- Practice the question types that show up in the hard module. In Math, start with the hardest SAT Math question types and our method for hard Module 2 Math questions.
- Take official practice tests in Bluebook. They use the same two-stage design, so you feel the change in pacing before test day. If you wonder whether those tests run harder than test day, read are Bluebook practice tests harder than the SAT.
- Take an adaptive test on our site. Create a free account to take one free full-length adaptive test and see which Module 2 you reach. Then work the free June 2026 Reading and Writing question bank to practice the skills you missed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Digital SAT easier than the paper SAT?
No. It is shorter: 134 minutes and 98 questions instead of 180 minutes and 154 questions. College Board says a 1050 on the digital SAT carries the same meaning as a 1050 on the paper SAT, so the scale did not get easier.
Is Module 2 harder than Module 1 on the SAT?
Only if you do well on Module 1. Bluebook then gives you a Module 2 that is, on average, harder. If Module 1 goes poorly, Module 2 is easier on average. Both versions include easy, medium and hard questions.
Does getting the harder Module 2 raise my SAT score?
Not by itself. College Board says students are not advantaged just for seeing the harder module or disadvantaged for seeing the easier one. Your score depends on which questions you answer correctly in both modules and how hard they are.
How long is the Digital SAT?
The Digital SAT takes 2 hours and 14 minutes: 64 minutes for Reading and Writing in two 32-minute modules and 70 minutes for Math in two 35-minute modules, with a 10-minute break between the sections.
