What is the SAT out of? The SAT is out of 1600. You get two section scores, Reading and Writing and Math, each from 200 to 800. Your total is the two added together, so the lowest possible score is 400 and the highest is 1600. Scores move in 10-point steps.
Short answer: the SAT is scored out of 1600, and the Digital SAT keeps that scale. College Board scores each section from 200 to 800 by the questions you got right and how hard they were. Check what your own total means on our What Is a Good SAT Score tool. For a worked example, read what percentile a 1400 is.

Start 1-day free trial →The SAT is out of 1600: 800 for Reading and Writing plus 800 for Math. College Board's Fall 2026 Understanding Scores guide lists the scores this way:
| Score | What it is | Range |
|---|---|---|
| Reading and Writing | Section score | 200 to 800 |
| Math | Section score | 200 to 800 |
| Total | Sum of the 2 section scores | 400 to 1600 |
College Board's percentile table lists every total from 400 to 1600 in steps of 10. Its scoring page confirms: "The digital SAT is still scored on a 400–1600 scale."
The PSAT tests use the same scale but stop lower. College Board's What Scores Mean page lists the PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 at 320 to 1520 and the PSAT 8/9 at 240 to 1440. For more on the top of the scale, see our guide to the highest SAT score possible.
How do you add up your SAT score?
Add your Reading and Writing score to your Math score. For example, 620 in Reading and Writing plus 580 in Math gives a total of 1200. College Board's guide describes the total as the "sum of the 2 section scores."
You do not add up correct answers yourself. College Board turns your answers into a section score from 200 to 800 first, then adds the two sections.
How is the Digital SAT scored?
College Board scores the Digital SAT by which questions you get right, how hard they are, and whether your answers look like guessing. College Board's scoring page says your scores "are a product of several factors, characteristics of the questions they answered right or wrong (e.g., the questions' difficulty levels), and the probability that the pattern of answers suggests they were guessing."
College Board calls this method Item Response Theory, or IRT. One result, in College Board's words: "two students who answer the same number of questions correctly in a test section may earn differing section scores."
The test is also adaptive. Each section has two modules. College Board's test structure page says the second module "will either be more difficult or less difficult" based on how you did on the first. Your section score "is based on how they did on all of the questions in both modules," per the scoring page. It also says "a range of section scores are possible no matter which second module a student sees."

How many questions are on the SAT, and how many count?
The SAT has 98 questions, and 90 of them count toward your score. College Board's test structure page lists 54 Reading and Writing questions in 64 minutes and 44 Math questions in 70 minutes. That is 2 hours and 14 minutes in all.
Each module includes "two pretest questions, which don't count for scoring," per the scoring page. With four modules, that is 8 pretest questions. The table shows the math:
| Section | Questions | Time | Pretest (unscored) | Scored |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reading and Writing | 54 (27 per module) | 64 minutes | 4 | 50 |
| Math | 44 (22 per module) | 70 minutes | 4 | 40 |
| Total | 98 | 2 hours 14 minutes | 8 | 90 |
Answer every question. College Board says "it's better to guess than leave a question blank" for most students, "especially if a student can eliminate one or two answer options before guessing."
Is the SAT curved?
College Board uses scaled scores. Its 2026 SAT annual report defines a scaled score as "the result of adjusting a raw score (the number of questions answered correctly) in ways that ensure that results across different test forms are comparable."
So a 1200 on one test date should mean the same as a 1200 on another. College Board says the same about the move to digital: "a score of 1050 on the digital SAT would correspond to and carry the same meaning as a score of 1050 on the paper and pencil SAT."
College Board's scoring page gives no raw-to-scaled chart. To estimate a score from practice, use the Digital SAT score calculator, which turns correct answers per module into an estimated score.
What is on your SAT score report?
Your score report shows three scores: total, Reading and Writing, and Math. College Board's Understanding Scores guide says each score comes with:
- The score range: 400 to 1600 for the total and 200 to 800 for each section.
- An All Tester Percentile: based on "the actual scores of the past 3 cohorts of students who took the SAT in 12th grade."
- An average score: for "all SAT test takers across the last 3 years."
You also get your own score range, which "show[s] how much a student's scores would likely vary if they took a different administration of the test under identical conditions." And you get a Knowledge and Skills section with your results in eight content domains, four in each section.
If you took the SAT with Essay, which College Board offers only "in states where it's required as part of SAT School Day," College Board scores the Essay separately "on a scale of 1–4." It does not change your 1600-point total.
What is a good score out of 1600?
Anything above about 1050 is above average. College Board's What Is a Good Score? page says "the average SAT score is around 1050" and "a score of 1350 or higher is in the top 10% of SAT test takers." The class of 2026 averaged 1045, per the 2026 annual report.
| SAT total (out of 1600) | User group percentile | Score page |
|---|---|---|
| 1600 | 99+ | Is 1600 good? |
| 1400 | 93 | Is 1400 good? |
| 1200 | 75 | Is 1200 good? |
| 1050 | 55 | Is 1050 good? |
| 1000 | 47 | Is 1000 good? |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the SAT out of?
The SAT is out of 1600. Reading and Writing and Math are each scored from 200 to 800, and the total is the two added together, from 400 to 1600, in 10-point steps.

Add your Reading and Writing section score to your Math section score. For example, 620 plus 580 is 1200. College Board turns your answers into the two section scores first.
How is the Digital SAT scored?
