Digital SAT Punctuation Made Easy: Bluebook Test 8 Guide (Questions 18-21)

Today, let's break down some tricky punctuation questions from the College Board's Bluebook Test 8, Module 1. We'll tackle questions 18, 19, 20, and 21 together.
Question 18: The "Job + Name = No Commas" Rule
Here's the text:
"The city of Pompeii, which was buried in ash following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE, continues to be studied by archaeologists. Unfortunately, as _______ attest, archaeological excavations have disrupted ash deposits at the site, causing valuable information about the eruption to be lost."
Okay, notice we have a job ("researchers") followed by names. The key rule here is simple: Job + Name = No Commas. This setup pops up a lot on the Digital SAT, so learning it can really help improve your SAT score quickly.
Let's Look at the Choices:
- A) researchers, Roberto Scandone and Christopher Kilburn,
Nope. Putting commas around the names makes them seem extra, but here they tell us *which* researchers. They're needed!
- B) researchers Roberto Scandone and Christopher Kilburn ✓
Perfect! This follows our "Job + Name = No Commas" rule. The names are essential, so no commas needed. You'll master this pattern fast using our digital SAT practice tests.
- C) researchers Roberto Scandone and Christopher Kilburn
Incorrect. This one forgets the comma needed *after* the names, separating them from "attest".
- D) researchers Roberto Scandone, and Christopher Kilburn
Wrong. There's an extra comma before "and," plus it breaks the main "Job + Name" rule.
Key Digital SAT Punctuation Rule: Job + Name = NO COMMAS when the name is essential.
Answer: B
Question 19: Comma vs. Semicolon with "However"
Alright, let's move on to question 19.
The text says:
Journalists have dubbed Gil Scott-Heron the “godfather of rap,” a title that has appeared in hundreds of articles about him since the 1990s. Scott-Heron himself resisted the godfather _______ feeling that it didn’t encapsulate his devotion to the broader African American blues music tradition as well as “bluesologist,” the moniker he preferred.
See where however sits? The big question is: semicolon or no semicolon? Here's the deal: use a semicolon if "however" connects two complete sentences (independent clauses). Use commas if "however" interrupts just one complete sentence.
Breaking Down the Options:
- A) nickname, however, ✓
This is the winner! The main sentence is "Scott-Heron himself resisted the godfather nickname." The part starting with "feeling" just explains *why* and isn't a full sentence on its own. Since "however" interrupts this single main idea, we need commas around it. Our affordable ACT prep classes (we cover ACT too!) explain this clearly.
- B) nickname, however;
Incorrect. A semicolon needs a complete sentence on both sides. "Feeling that it didn’t..." is not a complete sentence.
- C) nickname. however,
Wrong. This makes "Feeling that it didn’t..." a fragment (an incomplete sentence). Also, if "however" starts a new sentence, the comma goes *after* it, not before.
- D) nickname; however,
Nope. Again, you need two complete sentences for a semicolon before "however." "Feeling that it didn’t..." doesn't qualify.
Digital SAT Punctuation Tip: Use commas around "however" if it interrupts one main idea. Use a semicolon before and a comma after "however" only if it links two separate, complete sentences.
Answer: A
Question 20: Using a Colon Correctly
Let's tackle question 20. Another punctuation puzzle!
Read this:
Over twenty years ago, in a landmark experiment in the psychology of choice, professor Sheena Iyengar set up a jam-tasting booth at a grocery store. The number of jams available for tasting ______: some shoppers had twenty-four different options, others only six. Interestingly, the shoppers with fewer jams to choose from purchased more jam.
My eyes go right to the punctuation choices. The colon (:) has a specific job: it comes after a complete sentence (independent clause) and introduces a list, explanation, or example related to that sentence.
Analyzing the Choices:
- A) varied: ✓
Yes! "The number of jams available for tasting varied" is a complete thought. The colon perfectly introduces the explanation of *how* it varied (24 options vs. 6 options). This is a classic colon use case you'll practice in The Test Advantage course.
- B) varied,
Incorrect. Using just a comma here creates a comma splice – trying to connect two complete sentences (or a sentence and a list/explanation that acts like one) with only a comma. That's a no-no.
- C) varied, while
Not the best fit. "While" suggests a contrast, but the second part *explains* the first part. A colon is much better for introducing an explanation.
- D) varied while
Incorrect. This makes the first part sound incomplete ("...varied while some shoppers..."). You need punctuation to separate the main idea ("varied") from the explanation that follows.
Digital SAT Colon Rule: Use a colon (:) after a complete sentence to introduce something that directly explains or lists elements of that sentence.
