The Bluebook app is College Board's testing app for the digital SAT, the PSAT tests and digital AP Exams. You use it to practice, complete exam setup, get your admission ticket and take the real test. For 2026-27 it runs on Windows 11 (version 24H2 or newer), macOS 15 or newer, iPadOS 18 or newer, and school-managed Chromebooks. It does not run on phones, personal Chromebooks or Windows 10.
Short answer: download Bluebook from bluebook.app.collegeboard.org on the device you will test on, at least 30 days before test day. Click Test Your Device, sign in and take a practice test. Five days before the test, finish exam setup and print your admission ticket. On test morning, close and reopen the app so it updates. Every rule on this page is quoted from College Board's own pages, checked on September 28, 2026.

What is the Bluebook app?
Bluebook is the app you take the SAT in. In College Board's words, "Bluebook is the app where you practice, complete exam setup, access your admission ticket, and take the exam on test day" (College Board help center). Every test in the SAT Suite uses it: the SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10 and PSAT 8/9 (source).
Apple's App Store lists Bluebook as free, under the name "Bluebook Exams", which is why people also search for "bluebook exams app". College Board calls its full-length Bluebook practice tests free too.
Inside the app you get the same tools you will have on test day (Bluebook testing tools):
- Timer. You can hide it until 5 minutes remain.
- Desmos calculator. A graphing calculator you can drag around the screen. TTA's Desmos for the Digital SAT page lets you practice on the same calculator.
- Reference sheet with common math formulas.
- Highlights and notes, line reader, option eliminator (cross out wrong choices) and mark for review.
- Question menu and zoom.
The SAT itself has two sections. Reading and Writing is two 32-minute modules with 54 questions in all. Math is two 35-minute modules with 44 questions. The total is 134 minutes, with a 10-minute break between sections (SAT structure). Your second module in each section is easier or harder based on how you did in the first. That is called adaptive testing.
Which devices can run the Bluebook app in 2026-27?
Bluebook runs on Windows laptops and tablets, Macs, iPads and school-managed Chromebooks. College Board says: "You cannot run Bluebook on a personal Chromebook or mobile phone" (Approved Devices). College Board raised every minimum version for the 2026-27 school year (New Tech Requirements).
| Device | Minimum version | Highest tested version | Free space | Keyboard and mouse |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows laptop or tablet | Windows 11 24H2. S mode and Windows 11 SE not supported. | Windows 11 26H2. | 1 GB. | Mouse OK. No external keyboard on laptops. |
| Mac laptop | macOS 15. | macOS 26.5.2. | 1 GB. | Mouse OK. No external keyboard. |
| iPad | iPadOS 18. | iPadOS 26.6.1. | 250 MB (16 GB total). | Mouse OK. External keyboard allowed for the SAT. |
| Chromebook (school-managed only) | ChromeOS 144, with verified mode on. ChromeOS Flex not supported. | Any stable-channel version. | 1 GB. | Mouse OK. No external keyboard. |
| Phone or personal Chromebook | Not allowed. | Not allowed. | Not allowed. | Not allowed. |
Every device also needs to hold a charge for 3 to 4 hours, because you might not get an outlet. Laptop screens must be at least 10 inches and tablets at least 8 inches. Virtual machines are banned and "could result in disciplinary measures, including score cancellation" (device requirements overview).

Start 1-day free trial →Can I use Bluebook on Windows 10?
No. College Board's student alert from August 18, 2026 says a Windows device "needs to be running Windows 11 24H2 or newer. Older versions, including Windows 10, will not work on test day" (Bluebook student alerts). Windows 11 23H2 is too old as well. College Board's Windows page adds that Bluebook "can't be installed on versions below the required minimum" (Windows requirements).
The fastest check is Bluebook itself. Install it, click Test Your Device, and it checks your operating system. If your laptop cannot move to Windows 11 24H2, use a school device or borrow one (see below).
Students felt this change. An r/Sat post from August 14, 2026 is titled "Bluebook dropped support for windows 10". One reply warned: "Even if you've got Windows 11 23H2, you still have to update to at least 24H2."
Can I download Bluebook on a Chromebook or phone?
Only on a Chromebook your school manages, and never on a phone. On Chromebooks, Bluebook runs in kiosk mode, "so it's available only on Chromebooks managed through the Admin console in Google Workspace" (Chromebook requirements). Someone at your school has to install it and turn on verified mode. If you see a message that verified mode is not set up, College Board says: "You can't fix this yourself, so ask for help at school" (school-managed Chromebook guide).
If you plan to take a school Chromebook to a weekend test center, check it early. College Board warns: "Some schools use Chromebook settings that prevent Bluebook from working outside their network" (source). One student posted on August 19, 2026 that "BlueBook will NOT open because my chromebook will not update to the ChromeOS 144 version" (r/Sat).
Bluebook on iPad and Mac
Get it from the App Store, where it is called "Bluebook Exams". The App Store listing says it "Requires iPadOS 18.0 or later" and "Requires macOS 15.0 or later". Two Apple-only rules matter:
- Do not upgrade right before the test. "Apple usually releases upgrades to macOS in early fall. To avoid technical issues on test day, do not upgrade until after the test" (Approved Devices). The same rule applies to iPadOS.
- Turn off Guided Access on iPad. Go to Settings, then Accessibility, then Guided Access (iPad installation).
Mac users: do not test in a guest account. Guest data "is deleted as soon as the user signs out," so unsent answers can be lost (Mac installation).
No device? Borrow one from College Board
College Board may lend you a device for a weekend SAT. It is not guaranteed. The steps from the device lending page:
- First try to borrow a working device from your school, family or a friend.
- Register for a test date at least 30 days away. When asked about your device, choose "I don't know if I have access to the necessary device."
- At least 30 days before test day, go to My SAT and select Request a device. An adult who is not family (a teacher or counselor) must verify you.
- On test day, arrive 30 minutes before normal check-in. You get the device, sign in and finish exam setup there.
For the November 7, 2026 SAT, 30 days before is October 8. For December 5, it is November 5. College Board says loaned devices are "managed Chromebooks in new or like-new condition," and that it speeds up requests for students with fee waivers. Our SAT fee waiver guide explains who qualifies.
How do you download and install the Bluebook app?
Go to bluebook.app.collegeboard.org on the device you will test on. College Board says the page "will detect their device type and provide the right file" (Windows installation). The steps differ a little by device.
Bluebook download for Windows (PC)
- Open the Windows installer page and download the file.
- Run it. You need write access to your own user folder.
- If Windows shows "Windows protected your device," click More info, then Run anyway. College Board says this "does not mean bluebook is unsafe" and is "a one-time step."
- If there is no Run anyway button: right-click the file, choose Properties, check Unblock on the General tab, click OK and run it again (source).
Bluebook download for Mac and iPad
Install "Bluebook Exams" from the App Store. The Bluebook download page detects your device and gives you the right instructions.
School-managed laptops and Chromebooks
"If you're testing on a school-managed device, you might not be able to download Bluebook yourself" (Download Bluebook). Ask your school's tech staff to install it and allow auto-updates. You probably won't have the permissions to fix problems on test day, and test day staff won't either.
See which question types are costing you points
Start with a free mock, free drills, or preview sample questions before using all 45 question banks.
After you install: Test Your Device
Open Bluebook and click Test Your Device on the sign-in screen. It "checks the operating system, memory, and free space" and tells you what to fix (Prepare a Personal Device). Then check these settings:
- Turn on: auto-update, keyboard layout English (U.S.), automatic date and time.
- Turn off: parental controls, content filters, VPNs, Grammarly and other startup apps. College Board says "Bluebook must be the only application running during the test."
- If someone else downloaded it for you, they are the device administrator. They must make sure Bluebook can auto-update.
When do I get my SAT admission ticket in Bluebook?
Starting five days before your SAT. You open Bluebook, sign in and complete exam setup, then the app gives you your admission ticket. College Board prefers that you bring it printed; you can also email it to yourself (What to Bring). Here is the full timeline for a weekend SAT (SAT Weekend in Bluebook):
| When | What to do in Bluebook |
|---|---|
| At least 30 days before | Download Bluebook, click Test Your Device, sign in, take a practice test, and fix your settings. Connect to Wi-Fi somewhere other than home or school to make sure you can. |
| 5 days before | Close and reopen Bluebook to update it. Check that your name matches your ID. Complete exam setup and print your admission ticket. Memorize your College Board password; Bluebook will not save it. |
| Test day morning | Connect to the internet, close and reopen Bluebook, click Test Your Device, sign in and read any messages. Charge the battery. |
| At the test center | Arrive 15 minutes before the test begins. Connect to the center's Wi-Fi, sign in, check in, and enter the start code your proctor gives you. |
| End of the test | Bluebook submits your answers. Do not close your device until the proctor dismisses you. |
If you borrow a shared device, you must complete exam setup "on the same device they take the test on" (Windows requirements). TTA's SAT test dates page lists every 2026-27 date with a countdown.
How many practice tests are on Bluebook?
College Board's paper practice page lists eight full-length SAT practice tests, numbered 4 through 11, and says "you can take the same practice tests for free in Bluebook" (paper practice tests). The Bluebook practice pages do not print a count. College Board's spring 2026 feature list says "A new full-length SAT practice test will be available in Bluebook," so check the Practice and Prepare list in your app for the current set (New and Updated Features).
Some popular guides still say there are seven tests (4 to 10). Those guides leave out Test 11. Here is what the app gives you (Practice on Bluebook):
- Test preview. A short, untimed set to try the tools. No score.
- Full-length practice tests. Timed like the real SAT and adaptive like it. You can move ahead to the next section early. You can also pause a practice test and come back later (How to Use Bluebook Practice Tests).
- Scores in My Practice. You must be signed in to get a score. Your score shows on My Practice, not inside the app. Score Details lists every question, your answer and the correct answer (My Practice 101).
To check a practice score by hand, enter your correct answers per module in TTA's Digital SAT score calculator.
Which Bluebook practice test is the hardest?
College Board does not rank them. Students do. In one May 2026 r/Sat thread, "What's the hardest practice SAT test on Bluebook?", 12 replies named a test. Test 7 came up 5 times, Tests 6 and 11 came up 4 times each, and Test 10 once. One reply said "7 has some insane R&W questions." Treat this as opinion from a small group, not data.
We compared that opinion with College Board's scoring tables for all eight tests in which Bluebook practice test is hardest.
If you took Test 7 or 8 and want every answer explained, TTA has walkthroughs: Bluebook Practice Test 7 answers and explanations, Practice Test 8 answers, the Practice Test 10 guide, and how to review Tests 5 and 6. TTA's video courses page also has a free Digital SAT Bluebook Walkthrough Course with Mr. Osama Ahmad.
What is Bluebook Plus?
Bluebook Plus is not a College Board product. We found no page about it on collegeboard.org. It was a third-party website, bluebook.plus, that students used for extra practice. A post on r/bluebookplus from February 22, 2026, "bluebook.plus taken down", quotes a New York Times article that called it "an apparent knockoff of the official College Board platform." By July 2026 students were still asking for it: "I js discovered that bluebook plus was taken down" (r/digitalSATs).
There is also no web version of the real Bluebook. College Board's instructions are to download the app to a supported device. "Bluebook plus web" searches lead to third-party sites, not College Board.
Is Bluebook a lockdown browser?
It works like one, but it is an app, not a web browser. College Board says: "Bluebook will lock the student's device and detect any other applications, even if they're running in the background" (source). That is why Grammarly, messaging apps and VPNs must be closed. On Chromebooks it runs in kiosk mode. On iPads it needs assessment mode, which Guided Access can block.
Bluebook not working? Fixes College Board documents
Below are the problems College Board lists on its Bluebook troubleshooting page, with its fixes. Each fix is quoted or summarized from the linked page.
| What you see | College Board's fix |
|---|---|
| "Windows protected your device" when opening. | Click More info, then Run anyway. Or right-click the file, choose Properties, check Unblock (source). |
| Bluebook will not open at all. | Turn off your content filter or VPN (source). Make sure you clicked the star icon, check that collegeboard.org loads, then reinstall from bluebook.app.collegeboard.org (source). |
| Bluebook asks for an update or will not start after one. | Allow auto-update and reopen the app. "Bluebook won't open if the update is blocked for any reason" (Bluebook releases). |
| Your device is no longer compatible. | Update to the minimum version in the table above, or use another device. Windows 10 will not work. |
| "You Don't Have Enough Free Space." | Exit Bluebook, delete unwanted files and apps, and relaunch (source). |
| Chromebook says verified mode is not configured. | You cannot fix it. Ask your school's tech staff (source). |
| Message to quit Grammarly. | Click Quit Grammarly and Continue. If that fails, quit Bluebook, uninstall Grammarly and reopen (source). |
| iPad told to disable Guided Access, or iPad freezes. | Hard reset the iPad, close other apps, then turn off Settings, Accessibility, Guided Access (source). |
| Cannot sign in. | Reset your password at collegeboard.org. After 10 failed attempts, contact College Board Support (source). |
| Wi-Fi drops during the test. | Keep going. You need internet to start and to submit, "but not in between." Answers are saved on your device (source). |
| Answers did not submit at the end. | Exit and reopen Bluebook, restart the device, click Submit Answers on the homepage, or try another network. Submit from the same device you tested on (source). |
College Board also posts live problems on its student alerts page. On September 9, 2026 it reported "a technical issue that could affect the upcoming SAT for students with macOS and iOS devices" and told Mac and iOS users to "restart their Bluebook app a day before test day." Its alert for schools says the issue could make Bluebook "crash when students access the calculator" (Bluebook alerts). Check that page the day before your test.
What does Bluebook error code LD2B mean?
We could not find out, and we will not guess. As of September 28, 2026, no College Board page we checked names an "LD2B" code. That includes the Bluebook help center, the troubleshooting page and College Board's 15-page SAT Technical Troubleshooting Guide. A search of r/Sat also returned no posts about it. We found no public list of numbered Bluebook error codes on College Board's site.
What College Board does say about any error: close and reopen Bluebook, restart the device, check your internet, and reinstall if needed. If it keeps happening, call College Board digital testing support at 866-630-9305 (or +1 212-713-8000 outside the U.S.). Their support page asks: "What error messages did students see? Provide the error code if you can" (Contact support). Write down the exact code and message so support can look it up.
What should I do if Bluebook crashes during the SAT?
Raise your hand and tell your proctor right away. College Board's fix, in order: exit Bluebook, close background apps and sign in again. If that fails, restart the device. As a last resort the proctor starts a device swap. The proctor then lets you continue in Test Day Toolkit. College Board also says that "when students exit Bluebook, the timer pauses for a limited time" so you can recover (What if the device fails).
If you lost time or something went wrong, report it through the "SAT Test Day Problems" section of College Board's SAT contact page. It says problems generally must be reported "by 11:59 p.m. ET on the fourth weekday after the test administration."
What students report on r/Sat
These are individual student posts, not College Board statements:
- "Just as I was starting M2, bluebook CRASHED and would not restart." The student said they lost "about 15 mins" (September 14, 2026). Another reply in the thread said Bluebook "crashes while uploading my answers."
- "Got on bluebook to get admission ticket, and it stopped me right after I signed in" on a Windows 10 laptop (August 22, 2026).
- On YouTube, help videos carry titles like "(FIXED) Can't open Bluebook app in Windows" and "Bluebook Login Issues."
Both r/Sat posts describe a problem found on setup day or test day, when there was no time left to fix it. The 30-day device check exists to catch these early.
Test-day checklist for the Bluebook app
Bring these (College Board's What to Bring list):
- Your fully charged device with Bluebook installed and exam setup completed.
- Your admission ticket, printed if you can.
- An acceptable photo ID. It must be a physical document, not electronic.
- Pencils or pens. Scratch paper is provided; do not bring your own.
- Your College Board username and password.
- An acceptable calculator if you want one. The Desmos calculator is built into Bluebook.
- A charging cable or portable charger, a watch with no alarm, snacks for the break, and a backup device if you have one.
- A mouse if you use one. College Board recommends a wired mouse.
Test centers open at 7:45 a.m. and doors close at 8 a.m. unless your ticket says otherwise (What to Expect). After the test, see when SAT scores come out, and check our SAT cost guide before you register again.
Ran out of Bluebook practice tests? What to do next
Running out is common enough to be its own r/Sat topic. Our searches on September 28, 2026 found 18 posts from students who had finished every Bluebook test. One asked: "Do you recommend retaking the Bluebook tests multiple times?" Another noted that "most websites only offer one free test and then require payment."
Retaking a test you remember can inflate your score. One student in a "Ran out of Bluebook tests" thread wrote: "I was getting 1500+ on the practice tests, but on the real exam I only got 1180." That is one person's report. Still, if you remember the questions, your score measures memory as well as skill.
Here is what to do instead:
- Review before you retest. Open Score Details in My Practice and sort your misses by skill. College Board's Student Question Bank has more official questions by skill.
- Take a fresh adaptive test. Create a free account on The Test Advantage and take one full-length adaptive SAT section free. It works like Bluebook: Module 1 routes you to an easier or harder Module 2, and you get a scaled score. Reading and Writing is 27 plus 27 questions in 32 plus 32 minutes; Math is 22 plus 22 in 35 plus 35.
- Practice new questions by month. TTA's SAT question bank groups Digital SAT questions by test month, with separate English and Math banks for US and International forms. The June 2026 Reading and Writing Question Bank is free: try sample questions without an account, or work all 230 with a free account. The newest are the September 2026 Reading and Writing bank and the September 2026 Math bank. You can try five sample questions from any test in the practice test catalog with no account.
- Fix one skill at a time. TTA's free lesson notes teach one skill at a time, for example quadratic equations or Words in Context. A free account is needed to open them. For more questions, browse the Digital SAT question banks.
- Plan the weeks left. The free SAT study plan generator builds a week-by-week plan from your test date. For more question walkthroughs, see our SAT practice questions guide and how to use Desmos on the Digital SAT.
The Test Advantage is not affiliated with College Board, and its tests are not official College Board tests. Use Bluebook for the real app experience and TTA for more fresh, adaptive practice.

How we built this page
Every device rule, date and fix on this page was read on College Board's own pages (bluebook.collegeboard.org and satsuite.collegeboard.org) and the Apple App Store on September 28, 2026, and is linked where it is used. The practice test count comes from College Board's paper practice page. Student quotes come from public r/Sat posts, dated and linked, and are labeled as student reports. The r/Sat "hardest test" tally counts the replies we could load in one thread. We did not find any official source for error code LD2B, so we say so. College Board changes Bluebook requirements each school year; check the linked pages before your test.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Bluebook app?
Bluebook is College Board's testing app. College Board says it is "the app where you practice, complete exam setup, access your admission ticket, and take the exam on test day." The SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, PSAT 8/9 and digital AP Exams are all taken in Bluebook. Apple's App Store lists it as the free app "Bluebook Exams".
Can I use Bluebook on Windows 10?
No. College Board's August 18, 2026 student alert says a Windows device "needs to be running Windows 11 24H2 or newer. Older versions, including Windows 10, will not work on test day." Windows 11 23H2 is also below the minimum. If your laptop cannot upgrade, use a school device or request a loaner from College Board at least 30 days before test day.
Can I download Bluebook on a Chromebook or phone?
Not on a phone, and not on a personal Chromebook. Bluebook runs only on Chromebooks your school manages through Google Workspace, on ChromeOS 144 or newer with verified mode turned on. Your school's tech staff must install it. On a personal device, use a Windows 11 24H2 laptop, a Mac on macOS 15 or newer, or an iPad on iPadOS 18 or newer.
How many practice tests are on Bluebook?
College Board's paper practice page lists eight full-length SAT practice tests, numbered 4 through 11, and says you can take the same tests free in Bluebook. Bluebook also has an untimed test preview with no score. Full-length practice tests are scored when you are signed in, and scores appear in My Practice. College Board said in spring 2026 that a new SAT practice test would be added.
When do I get my SAT admission ticket in Bluebook?
Starting five days before your SAT. Open Bluebook on your testing device, sign in to your College Board account, complete exam setup, then print the admission ticket or email it to yourself. College Board prefers a printed ticket. If you borrow a device from College Board, you complete setup and get the ticket at the test center, arriving 30 minutes early.
What is Bluebook Plus?
Bluebook Plus is not a College Board product; we found no page about it on collegeboard.org. It was a third-party website, bluebook.plus, that students used for extra practice. A February 2026 Reddit post quotes a New York Times article calling it "an apparent knockoff of the official College Board platform," and students on Reddit report it was taken down.
What does Bluebook error code LD2B mean?
We could not find any College Board page, including its Technical Troubleshooting Guide, or any r/Sat post that names error code LD2B as of September 28, 2026. College Board's general advice is to close and reopen Bluebook, restart the device, check the internet connection and reinstall. If it continues, call digital testing support at 866-630-9305 and give them the exact code.
What should I do if Bluebook crashes during the SAT?
Tell your proctor right away. College Board's fix is to exit Bluebook, close background apps and sign in again, then restart the device if needed, with a device swap as a last resort. The timer pauses for a limited time when you exit. Report lost time through College Board's SAT Test Day Problems form by 11:59 p.m. ET on the fourth weekday after the test.
