An SAT English practice test is a practice run of the Digital SAT Reading and Writing section: 54 questions in 64 minutes, split into two 32-minute modules. The best free version is a full-length Bluebook practice test from College Board. For more English practice after that, use question banks sorted by skill and test date, such as our SAT question bank.
This page shows you where to find English practice tests, how to take one so the score means something, and how to turn your mistakes into points.
What an SAT English practice test covers
The SAT no longer has separate reading and writing tests. You get one Reading and Writing section with short passages, and each passage has one multiple-choice question. College Board groups the questions into four content domains, and both modules include all four.
| Domain (College Board) | What it tests | Where to practice it |
|---|---|---|
| Craft and Structure | Words in context, how a text is built, and links between two related texts | Vocabulary and purpose questions in any English question bank |
| Information and Ideas | Reading closely, finding evidence and using tables, bar graphs and line graphs | Evidence and inference sets |
| Standard English Conventions | Sentence structure, usage and punctuation | Our SAT grammar rules cheat sheet, then grammar drills |
| Expression of Ideas | Revising a text to meet a goal, including transitions and notes questions | Our SAT transition words guide, then transition sets |
Inside each module, College Board puts questions that test similar skills together and orders them from easiest to hardest. If you stall on a hard vocabulary question, skip it. The next group of skills starts again with easier questions.
How the English section adapts
The June 2026 English question bank is free. Work it with a free account, then use free Targeted Practice on your weak skills.
Start 1-day free trial →Module 1 mixes easy, medium and hard questions. Your result on Module 1 decides whether Module 2 is harder or easier. Each module has 20 to 25 scored questions plus two pretest questions that do not count. You cannot tell which questions are pretest, so treat every one as scored.
A practice test without this routing will not show you how Module 2 feels. Check that any English practice test you use either adapts or tells you which Module 2 you are seeing. Our walk-through of the Practice Test 1 adaptive branch shows the difference.

How to take an English practice test so the score counts
- Sit at one desk with a timer set to 32 minutes for each module. Take the 10-minute break only if you plan to do Math next.
- Answer every question. A blank earns nothing, and College Board says it is usually better to guess, especially after you rule out one or two choices.
- Mark any question where you guessed. A lucky guess hides a weak skill.
- Review the same day. Sort each miss into one of the four domains, then by skill.
Turn your misses into a short plan
Count your misses by skill and find the two or three that cost you the most points, for example transitions, punctuation between clauses, or words in context. Spend the next week on those skills only, then take a second English practice test.
On TTA, your dashboard does this sorting for you. Every English question carries a difficulty band from 1 (foundational) to 7 (hardest). Targeted sets move you up a band when you get one right and step you down after two misses in a row. Each missed question goes into a list you can retry later.
