Quick Answer

The Digital SAT raw-to-scaled conversion depends on raw score and Module 2 difficulty. Hard Module 2 allows scores up to 800 per section; Easy Module 2 caps around 670. Approximate tables show, for example, 54 raw in R&W yields ~670 (Easy) or 800 (Hard).

The Digital SAT does not use a fixed raw-to-scaled conversion. Because the test adapts to your performance, your final scaled score depends on two factors: the number of correct answers and which Module 2 version you received. A student who gets 38 out of 44 right on the Math Hard path earns a higher score than a student who gets 42 out of 44 right on the Easy path.

This article explains how the scoring system works, provides approximate conversion tables for both sections, and shows the number of questions you can miss at each score target from 1100 to 1600.

How Digital SAT scoring works

The Digital SAT scores Reading & Writing and Math as separate sections, each on a 200-800 scale. Your composite is the sum of both sections, ranging from 400 to 1600.

There is no penalty for guessing. Every correct answer adds to your raw score. Wrong and blank answers both count as zero. You should answer every question.

Raw score vs scaled score

Your raw score is the total number of questions you answered correctly across both modules in a section. For Reading & Writing, there are 54 total questions, so the maximum raw score is 54. For Math, there are 44 total questions, so the maximum raw score is 44.

That raw score converts to a scaled score between 200 and 800. The conversion is not a straight percentage. It accounts for the difficulty of the specific test form and which Module 2 you were routed to.

How adaptive routing affects your score ceiling

Your Module 1 performance determines which Module 2 you take. This is the part most students do not fully understand.

If you are routed to Hard Module 2: The questions are harder, but your score ceiling is 800. Getting most of these right gives you access to scores in the 700-800 range. The curve is more forgiving per question missed because the questions are harder.

If you are routed to Easy Module 2: The questions are easier, and your score ceiling is approximately 650-670 regardless of how many you get right. Answering every Easy Module 2 question correctly cannot get you above approximately 670 per section.

This means if your goal is 700+ per section, your Module 1 performance is what matters most. Every question you miss in Module 1 has more consequences than a Module 2 question.

How many questions can you miss at each score target?

This is the table most students actually need. It assumes you are on the Hard Module 2 path in both sections, which is required to reach composite scores above 1340.

Score Target R&W: Max missed (Hard M2) Math: Max missed (Hard M2) What this means
1600 (perfect) 0 0 Everything right, both sections
1550+ ~2-3 ~2-3 Near-perfect; one careless error per section
1500 ~4-6 ~4-5 Top 1% range; very few errors allowed
1450 ~7-9 ~6-8 Strong score; some room for errors
1400 ~9-11 ~9-11 About 80% accuracy per section needed
1350 ~12-14 ~11-13 Top 10%; Hard M2 required for both
1300 ~14-17 ~13-16 Mix of Hard + Easy M2 possible
1200 ~20-24 ~18-22 About 600 per section; likely Easy M2
1100 ~26-30 ~24-28 About 550 per section; Easy M2 path
Note on the 1300 row and below: These scores can be reached through different combinations. A 650 in R&W via Easy M2 and a 650 in Math via Hard M2 both add up to 1300. The "max missed" numbers above assume the Hard path. On the Easy path you can miss fewer questions to reach the same scaled score because

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Digital SAT scoring system work?

The Digital SAT scores Reading & Writing and Math separately on a 200-800 scale. Raw score is total correct answers (no penalty for guessing). Scaled score conversion depends on raw score and which Module 2 (Hard or Easy) you receive based on Module 1 performance.

What is the maximum scaled score for Easy Module 2?

The maximum scaled score for Easy Module 2 is approximately 650-670 per section, regardless of how many questions you answer correctly.

How many questions can you miss to get a 1500 on the Digital SAT?

Assuming Hard Module 2 in both sections, you can miss about 4-6 questions in Reading & Writing and 4-5 questions in Math to achieve a 1500 composite score.

What raw score corresponds to a 700 in Reading & Writing on Hard Module 2?

A raw score of 42 in Reading & Writing on Hard Module 2 corresponds to approximately 680-700 scaled.

Is there a penalty for guessing on the Digital SAT?

No, there is no penalty for guessing. Wrong and blank answers both count as zero, so you should answer every question.
