Short answer: your SAT score report shows a total score from 400 to 1600 and two section scores from 200 to 800, one for Reading and Writing and one for Math. To know what your score means, compare it to three things: the national average (1045 for the class of 2026), College Board’s readiness benchmarks (480 and 530), and your percentile.
What is on your SAT score report
- Total score (400 to 1600): your two section scores added together.
- Section scores (200 to 800): one for Reading and Writing, one for Math.
- Score range: how much your score would likely move if you took a different test under the same conditions. Treat your score as a range, not one exact number.
- Percentiles: how you compare with other students who took the test.
- Knowledge and Skills: how you did in each of 8 content areas, 4 in Reading and Writing and 4 in Math. College Board shows how many questions each area has, for example 12 to 14 questions is about 26% of Reading and Writing.
What your percentile means
A percentile tells you the share of students who scored at or below you. If you are in the 70th percentile, 70% of the comparison group scored the same as you or lower. To look up a score, use our SAT percentiles chart.
Is your score good? Three ways to check
| Compare to | Reading and Writing | Math | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class of 2026 average | 528 | 517 | 1045 |
| College and Career Readiness Benchmark | 480 | 530 | 1010 |
- Average: above 1045 means you beat the national average for the class of 2026.
- Benchmarks: College Board says meeting 480 in Reading and Writing and 530 in Math means you are likely to succeed in first-year college courses in that subject. 42% of the class of 2026 met both.
- Your colleges: what matters most is how your score compares with the middle 50% at the schools you want. See our pages for schools like Penn State, UF, NYU and Harvard.
Why two students with the same number right can get different scores
The digital SAT is scored with a method that looks at which questions you got right, not just how many. College Board says two students who answer the same number of questions correctly in a section may get different section scores, depending on how hard those questions were. That is why getting hard questions right matters.
