Short answer: the digital SAT takes 2 hours and 14 minutes of testing time, plus a 10-minute break, according to College Board. That is 134 minutes for 98 questions. Plan extra time on top of that for check-in and setup.
SAT timing by section
| Part | Time | Questions |
|---|---|---|
| Reading and Writing, Module 1 | 32 minutes | 27 |
| Reading and Writing, Module 2 | 32 minutes | 27 |
| Break | 10 minutes | |
| Math, Module 1 | 35 minutes | 22 |
| Math, Module 2 | 35 minutes | 22 |
| Total testing time | 2 hr 14 min | 98 |
Reading and Writing always comes first. The 10-minute break sits between the two sections.
How much time you get per question
- Reading and Writing: 64 minutes for 54 questions, about 71 seconds each.
- Math: 70 minutes for 44 questions, about 95 seconds each.
Each Reading and Writing question has its own short passage, so 71 seconds covers reading and answering. In Math you get more time per question, and the built-in Desmos calculator is available for the whole section.
Why the digital SAT is shorter than the old SAT
The digital SAT is shorter than the old paper test because it is adaptive: your first module in each section decides whether your second module is easier or harder. That lets College Board measure your skills with fewer questions. Wikipedia’s summary of the SAT notes that the digital format began in March 2023 internationally and March 2024 in the US.
What adds time on test day
- Check-in and setup: arriving, showing ID, and starting Bluebook on your device.
- Extended time: students with approved accommodations get more time, so their test runs longer.
How to practice the timing
- Take a full timed test at least once before test day so 2 hours 14 minutes does not surprise you. Try a free full-length practice test.
- Practice the break. Have water and a snack ready, and use the 10 minutes to reset before Math.
- Watch your pace. If you are spending more than 2 minutes on one question, make your best guess and move on.
- Drill your slow question types in Targeted Practice.
