SAT practice test scores are estimates, and how close they land depends on who wrote the test and how you took it. College Board's full-length Bluebook practice tests are scored by College Board, so they are the best baseline. Third-party tests give a predicted score or a score range. Take each one timed, in one sitting, and treat a range across two or three tests as your true starting point. Then drill your weak skills in a question bank such as our SAT question bank.
This page explains how Digital SAT scoring works, how the main practice tests report scores, and how to read your own results without fooling yourself.
How the Digital SAT turns answers into a score
The Digital SAT scores each section on a 200 to 800 scale, for a total of 400 to 1600. Each section has two modules, and your Module 1 result decides whether Module 2 is harder or easier. College Board scores both modules together.
College Board uses Item Response Theory. Your score depends on which questions you got right, including how hard they were, and on whether your pattern of answers suggests guessing. In College Board's words, two students who answer the same number of questions correctly "may earn differing section scores." Each module also has two pretest questions that do not count toward your score.
That is why a simple raw-score chart can only approximate a digital score. Our Digital SAT score calculator gives an estimate, and is the SAT curved explains the scale in more detail.
A range tells you more than one score. Create a free account and take one free full-length adaptive test (English or Math) for a likely score range.

A range is more honest than a single number. One practice test can swing with a good or bad day, a lucky guess, or one module that hit your weak skills. That is why TTA reports a likely range instead of one score.
Five habits that make practice scores look better or worse than they are
- Pausing the clock. An untimed test measures what you know, not what you can do in 32 or 35 minutes per module.
- Splitting the test across days. Test day runs 2 hours and 14 minutes of testing plus a 10-minute break. Take the full test in one sitting.
- Retaking the same test. You remember passages and answers, so a second score on the same test runs high.
- Skipping questions. College Board says it is usually better to guess than leave a blank, especially after you rule out a choice or two.
- Judging one module. Your section score comes from both modules, so do not read much into how Module 1 felt.

How to read your practice test scores
Take two or three full-length tests over a few weeks and write down each section score. Look at the range, not the best result. If your Math scores were 610, 650 and 630, plan around the 610 to 650 range.
Then look past the total. A score report shows which skills cost you points, and those skills tell you what to practice. Our guide on how to review Bluebook mistakes walks through a full review. To see where a score falls against other test takers, use our SAT percentiles page.
Are some practice tests harder than the SAT?
Some Bluebook tests may feel harder than others. Our page on whether Bluebook practice tests are harder than test day looks at that question, and the hardest Bluebook practice test covers which one to save for last. If your score drops on one test, check which skills it hit before you worry.

How we built this page
Updated October 23, 2026. Scoring rules, pretest questions, test length and the guessing advice come from College Board's How Scores Are Calculated and SAT structure pages, and the 200 to 800 section scale from its Assessment Framework for the Digital SAT Suite. Bluebook score details come from College Board's Reading and Writing and Bluebook practice tests pages. Kaplan, UWorld and PrepScholar details come from kaptest.com/sat, collegereadiness.uworld.com/sat and prepscholar.com/sat-test-prep. We read all of them that day. TTA facts come from our live pricing page. The sample Math scores above are an example, not student data.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are SAT practice test scores accurate?
They are estimates. College Board scores its own Bluebook practice tests, so those make the best baseline. Other providers report a predicted score or a range. Your result also depends on how you took the test, so take it timed and in one sitting.
How is the Digital SAT scored?
Each section is scored from 200 to 800, for 400 to 1600 in total. College Board uses Item Response Theory, so the difficulty of the questions you get right matters, and two students with the same number correct can earn different section scores.
Why did my practice test score go up when I retook the test?
You remember the passages and answers from the first try, so a second score on the same test runs high. Use a different test each time you want a new score.
Do pretest questions count on SAT practice tests?
On the Digital SAT, each module includes two pretest questions that do not count toward your score, according to College Board. You cannot tell which ones they are, so answer every question as if it counts.
How should I read my practice test scores?
Take two or three full-length tests over a few weeks and plan around the range, not your best score. Then use the score report to find the skills that cost you points and practice those first.
