The SAT you take in Egypt or the Gulf is the same test students take in the U.S. College Board's test structure page lists two sections: Reading and Writing (54 questions, 64 minutes) and Math (44 questions, 70 minutes). It takes 2 hours and 14 minutes in total. Each section has two modules. How you do on the first module decides whether the second is harder or easier.

College Board's scoring page says the Digital SAT is still scored on a 400 to 1600 scale. Its guide to understanding scores lists 200 to 800 for each section score.

Your SAT score is one part of a college application. Each college decides how it uses SAT scores. Admission rules for Egyptian universities are set by Egyptian authorities, so check them there. This guide covers College Board's rules and planning for U.S. and international colleges.

When should American Diploma students take their first SAT?

Most students take their first SAT in the spring of grade 11. College Board's registering page says: "Most students take the SAT for the first time in the spring of their junior year and then again in the fall of their senior year." In an American Diploma school, junior year is grade 11 and senior year is grade 12.

The table maps that pattern onto the official dates from College Board's dates and deadlines page. The grade column is our planning advice.

Your grade in 2026-27Suggested SAT datesRegister by
Grade 12Nov. 7 or Dec. 5, 2026Oct. 23 or Nov. 20, 2026
Grade 11 (first SAT)March 6 or May 1, 2027Feb. 19 or April 16, 2027
Grade 11 (second SAT)June 5, 2027May 21, 2027
Grade 11 now, grade 12 next yearAug. 28, Sept. 18 or Oct. 9, 2027 (anticipated)Not open yet
Grade 9 or 10No sitting needed yetBuild skills and take timed practice

College Board lists the 2027-28 dates as anticipated, so they can change. If you are in grade 12 now, College Board's registration page calls December 5 the "Last Test Before College Deadlines." For deadlines by country, see SAT test dates in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar or the Digital SAT in Egypt.

How many times should you take the SAT?

Plan for two sittings and keep room for a third. That is planning advice, not a rule. College Board does allow retakes. College Board's guide to understanding scores says a grade 11 student "may take the SAT again" at school or on another weekend date "if she wants to improve her score."

Two facts make a planned retake useful:

  • Your score report shows your results in four Reading and Writing skill areas and four Math skill areas, so you know what to fix before the next sitting.
  • Each sitting outside the U.S. costs $111 (the $68 fee plus a $43 international fee, per College Board's international fees page), so a plan saves money.

Colleges set their own score policies. Some ask for every score, and some superscore. Check each college's admissions page before you decide how many times to test.

What are Score Choice and superscoring?

Score Choice lets you pick which test dates you send. Superscoring is something a college does with the scores it gets.

College Board's Score Choice page says you can choose "which scores you send to colleges," by test date. It adds that "some colleges and scholarship programs require you to send all your scores." Score Choice does not apply to the free score sends you pick when you register.

Superscoring is a college policy. College Board's score sending page says you cannot send your Math score from one day and your Reading and Writing score from another: "Scores from an entire SAT are sent." It then explains: "Some institutions use superscoring, which means they consider your highest section scores across multiple test dates." For example, if a college superscores, your best Math from March and your best Reading and Writing from June can count together. Only the college decides whether it does this.

What SAT score should American Diploma students aim for?

Aim for a score that fits the colleges you want. College Board's good score page says "a good SAT score is one that helps you get admitted to a college you want to go to!" Its target score page gives three steps:

  1. Look up a college on BigFuture College Search.
  2. Find its SAT range on the Applying tab. That is "what most students scored who were admitted and enrolled."
  3. Take a full-length practice test to get your baseline.

Percentiles show where a score sits. The table uses College Board's SAT percentile tables. College Board bases user group percentiles on SAT takers who graduated in the past three school years.

College Board's good score page also says the average SAT score is "around 1050" and that "A score of 1350 or higher is in the top 10% of SAT test takers." To see which colleges fit a mid-range score, read what colleges accept a 1300 SAT score. If you are aiming higher, read how to get a 1400 on the SAT. You can check any score on our SAT percentiles tool.

How do you research U.S. colleges from Egypt or the Gulf?

Start with a list of colleges, then compare their SAT ranges with your practice scores. The Test Advantage has two free tools for this:

  • The College Finder for international students finds U.S. universities that balance cost, acceptance rate and quality. You enter your SAT or ACT score, GPA and priorities, and no sign-up is needed.
  • The college profiles list acceptance rates and SAT ranges for 265 U.S. colleges and universities, from U.S. Department of Education data.

For test dates, fees, ID rules and devices outside the U.S., read the Digital SAT for international students.
