Sources: PrepScholar's SAT tutoring page, Princeton Review's SAT tutoring page and Kaplan's SAT prep page. Princeton Review's own product page lists the 18-hour package as "$175/hr", which matches our math.

The simple average of the six hourly rates we could compute is about $190 an hour. That average covers only these six packages from two companies. It is not a national average. Kaplan is left out because its page does not show a price for each hour count.

Why does the hourly price drop in bigger packages?

Companies give a lower rate when you buy more hours up front. PrepScholar's rate falls from $248.75 an hour at 4 hours to $149.84 an hour at 32 hours. That is about 40% less per hour. The lowest hourly rate also comes with the biggest bill, $4,795.

Before you buy a large package, find out how many hours you need. A free full-length practice test in Bluebook shows where your points go. Our guide to what an SAT mock test is and where to take one explains how to set one up at home.

All three companies bundle a course or practice platform with the tutor hours, so compare what each bundle includes.

  • PrepScholar says each package includes its "Complete Online Prep program with 40+ hours of test practice" and a "1-Hour Risk-Free Trial".
  • Princeton Review lists "365 days access to online materials" and "9 full-length digital SAT practice tests" with its tutoring packages.
  • Kaplan says its tutoring option "Includes a complete, 18-hour Live Online SAT course" and "4 full-length adaptive practice tests with score analysis".

If you already have plenty of practice material, a bundle may repeat what you own. If you have none, the bundle can be part of the value.

How much do SAT group classes cost compared with tutoring?

Group classes cost far less per hour because several students share one teacher. We found these published group prices.

  • Kaplan Live Online SAT Prep Course: $799 list price for "18 hours of live instruction". That is about $44 an hour. On October 13, 2026, the page also showed a promo price of $680 with a code.
  • PrepScholar Live Instructor Led Classes: $895 for "Up to 36 Hours of Interactive Classes with a Live Teacher" in a "group of up to 9 students". At the full 36 hours, that is about $25 an hour. Details are on PrepScholar's SAT prep options page.
  • The Test Advantage live group course: the October 2026 Reading and Writing course runs October 6 to December 3, 2026, in groups of 3 to 5 students, for 120 USD. The page offers a free 30-minute trial class first. See all live SAT courses.

A tutor works only on your mistakes, while a class moves at the group's pace. Our comparison of live SAT classes vs. self-paced prep covers that choice in more depth.

Is there free SAT tutoring?

Yes. College Board points students to free live tutoring through Schoolhouse.world. College Board's Bluebook practice page describes "live, 4-week, small-group tutoring sessions led by trained peer tutors who recently excelled on the SAT."

The Schoolhouse SAT Bootcamp page says the bootcamps are "designed for learners scoring between 400-690 on an SAT Math or Reading & Writing section." It also says its peer tutors "scored in the top 5% on the SAT."

What does The Test Advantage cost?

The Test Advantage is a practice platform first, with optional live classes. Prices below come from the live pricing page and course pages on October 13, 2026.

  • Free: $0, no card needed. It includes 1 full-length adaptive test, 30 practice questions per day, 10 Mr. O messages per day and a score report.
  • Premium Monthly: $39.99 a month. It covers 43 Digital SAT question banks from 2023 to 2026, adaptive tests with Module 1 and Module 2, skill drills, Mr. O AI tutor help and mistake review.
  • Premium Annual: $250 a year, which the page says equals $20.83 a month.
  • One-on-one sessions: you can book Mr. Osama Ahmad through the tutor page. The booking page says sessions are 1 hour by default. It does not list an hourly price, so ask when you book.

For scale: a year of Premium at $250 costs less than two hours of Princeton Review's 18-hour package rate ($175 an hour). Treat that as a sense of scale, since an app and a tutor do different jobs.

How can you get more from each paid tutoring hour?

Spend tutor time on the problems you cannot fix alone. Do the practice on your own time.

  1. Test first. Take a timed practice test before your first session, so the tutor starts with real data.
  2. Bring your misses. Sort missed questions by skill. A free June 2026 Reading and Writing question bank lets you practice by domain between sessions.
  3. Practice between sessions. Work items from the Digital SAT question banks on your own, so session time goes to new problems.
  4. Retest before you add hours. Browse the practice test catalog and check whether the last block of hours moved your score.
