Late registration covers the four days from the regular deadline to the late deadline. College Board says late registration "is available worldwide. Additional fees apply."
The test fees page lists these costs "through June 2027":
- Registration: $68.
- Late registration: $38 more, for $106 in total. College Board marks it "Free with fee waiver."
- Testing outside the U.S.: an international fee of $43 on top.
- Waitlist: $0. It can place you "into an open seat when one becomes available within your set radius."
Our SAT cost guide covers the other fees.
Are there SAT deadlines earlier than the registration deadline?
Yes, for two groups of students.
- If you need to borrow a device: College Board says students who borrow one "will need to register and request their device earlier than the registration deadline." The cutoff is at least 30 days before test day. For December 5, 2026, that is November 5.
- If you use a fee waiver, the fee waiver page asks you to request it "at least 1–2 weeks before the registration deadline." You also give contact details for an adult who can confirm you qualify, so start early.
Testing with accommodations? College Board's registration change page sets the deadline for accommodation updates at 5 days before the test date.
How do you register for the SAT?
Online, through your College Board account. College Board's registering page says it "takes about 30 minutes, but you can start it and then come back to finish later."
- Look at test centers. Some have no seats, and you see availability as you register.
- Pick a test date. College Board says most students first take the SAT in the spring of junior year and again in the fall of senior year.
- Sign in to your free College Board account. College Board says "your parent or counselor can't do it for you."
- Enter your details, pick a date and place, and upload a photo that meets College Board's rules.
Homeschooled students enter 970000 as the high school code. Fee waiver users enter the 12-digit code on the payment page; after August 13, 2026, College Board says to use codes that start with "FW26."
Can you register for the SAT after the late deadline?
The College Board pages we read list no way to register after it. The late deadline is the last registration date on the dates page.
If you miss it, you have two options:
- Take the next test date from the table above. After December 5, 2026, the next weekend SAT is March 6, 2027.
- Ask your counselor about SAT School Day, the SAT some schools give on a weekday. Students "do not need to register on their own," per College Board. The spring 2027 window runs March 1 to April 30, 2027.
What happens after you register?
- To change your date, College Board says "you must cancel and register for a new test." Changing only your test center costs $34.
- Canceling costs $34 before the change deadline and $44 after it, up to Thursday 11:59 p.m. ET before test day, per College Board's canceling page.
- The week before test day, College Board's test date pages tell you to sign in to Bluebook to finish exam setup and get your admission ticket.
How should you use the time between registering and test day?
Register early and you may have weeks or months. Use them in this order:
- Get a week-by-week plan from the free SAT study plan generator, based on your test date and weekly hours.
- Take one timed section. A free account includes one full-length adaptive SAT section. Our newest adaptive tests use the module sizes on College Board's SAT structure page: 27 Reading and Writing questions in 32 minutes, or 22 Math questions in 35 minutes, per module.
- Practice by domain in our newest banks, October 2026 Reading and Writing and October 2026 Math, or start with the free June 2026 Reading and Writing bank.
- Know when results land. Our guide to what time SAT scores are released covers score day.
