UCLA SAT Scores: Why UCLA Does Not Use the SAT (and What It Uses Instead)

Quick Answer

UCLA, like every University of California campus, is test-free. UC does not consider SAT or ACT scores for admission or scholarships. Scores you report can only be used to meet minimum eligibility requirements or for course placement after you enroll.

Short answer: UCLA does not use SAT or ACT scores in admission decisions or scholarships. The whole University of California system is test-free. That is why you will not find a current UCLA SAT range: UCLA does not collect scores for admission review.

Can scores still be used? Only for minimum eligibility or course placement

Does UCLA require the SAT?

No. UC says it “does not consider SAT or ACT test scores when making admissions decisions or awarding scholarships.” UCLA’s 2026 first-year guide says the same.

How UCLA became test-free

  • May 2020: the UC Regents approved a plan to drop the SAT and ACT requirement.
  • 2021: a legal settlement moved permanent test-blind admission up to fall 2021, and UC decided a new UC-made test was not realistic.
  • March 2022: the California State University system also dropped tests, so every California public four-year system is now test-free.

The UC Regents’ September 2026 meeting agenda included a report on UC’s testing history, but no policy change had been announced as of October 2026.

When an SAT score can still help at UCLA

  • Minimum eligibility: UC says reported scores can be an alternate way to meet some minimum requirements.
  • Course placement: after you enroll, scores can be used to place you in courses.
  • How to report: UC says to submit your application first without scores, then log back in to add them.

For international applicants, UCLA does not ask for SAT scores and recommends TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo for English proficiency, not the SAT.

Should you still take the SAT if you want UCLA?

Yes, if you are applying anywhere else too. Many schools on the same lists as UCLA now require scores again, including MIT, Stanford and Yale. A strong SAT keeps those doors open. For UCLA itself, your grades in UC-approved courses and your Personal Insight Questions carry the weight.
