Why WPI switched back
- 2007: WPI became the first nationally ranked STEM school to go test-optional.
- April 2021: WPI faculty voted 86 to 34 for an eight-year test-blind pilot, from fall 2021 to spring 2029.
- Fall 2024: the faculty’s Committee on Academic Policy proposed ending the pilot early. It found no significant rise in diverse applicants, a drop among international students, and that some students saw test-blind schools as less competitive. WPI was also the only test-blind school among its peers.
How WPI uses scores now

- Superscoring: WPI uses your best superscored SAT.
- ACT: WPI uses your best composite and does not need ACT Science.
- Transfers: scores are not considered.
- SAT code: 3969.
What SAT score should you send?
Use WPI’s last published range as a guide: send your score if it is about 1340 or higher, and treat 1480 or higher as a clear plus. WPI is a STEM school, so a strong Math score matters most.
