A National Merit Commended Student is a high scorer on the junior-year PSAT/NMSQT who did not make their state's Semifinalist cutoff. NMSC names about 34,000 Commended Students each September, using one national Selection Index cutoff. For the class of 2027 that cutoff was 208. Commended Students get a Letter of Commendation through their high school. They do not continue in the National Merit competition, but some can be candidates for Special Scholarships from corporate sponsors.

What score do you need to be Commended?
Your Selection Index, not your total. Double your Reading and Writing score, add your Math score, and divide by 10. NMSC sets the Commended cutoff nationally, and Compass Prep reports it moved from 210 for the class of 2026 to 208 for the class of 2027. For the class of 2028 (the October 2026 PSAT), Compass Prep's early estimate is 207 to 212. NMSC announces the real number in September 2027.
What does 208 look like in section scores? A 700 in Reading and Writing with a 680 in Math gives (1400 + 680) / 10 = 208. So does 690 and 700. Try your own scores in our free PSAT score calculator.
What being Commended means
NMSC calls it recognition of "outstanding ability and potential for academic success in college" and sends the Letter of Commendation through your school. You can list it on college applications as an academic honor. NMSC says Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, but some are candidates for Special Scholarships offered by corporate sponsors.
If you are close to your state's Semifinalist cutoff, being Commended can sting. Your PSAT score is still a same-day estimate of your SAT score, since College Board uses one scale for both, and the skills that got you there are the same ones that raise an SAT score.

Frequently asked questions
Is National Merit Commended a big deal?
It is a national academic honor that about 34,000 students earn each year. It does not lead to a National Merit Scholarship, but it is worth listing on applications.
When do Commended Students find out?
In September of senior year, through their high school, at the same time Semifinalists are named.
Can a Commended Student become a Semifinalist?
Not in the same year. Semifinalists are named from the same PSAT/NMSQT scores using state cutoffs, and Commended Students fell below their state's cutoff.
Do sophomores get Commended?
Only the PSAT/NMSQT taken in the right year counts for National Merit, which for most students is junior year.
