So October was a bit harder than September and a bit easier than August in both sections. The gaps run from 1 to 8 percentage points.

Was the US October SAT harder than the International one?

Yes, on our ratings. The US version had a larger share of Hard questions in both sections. The gap was biggest in Math.

October 2026 versionSectionQuestions in bankHard
USReading and Writing8333 (40%)
InternationalReading and Writing21777 (35%)
USMath3217 (53%)
InternationalMath7420 (27%)

The US Math sample is small, only 32 questions. Treat it as a strong hint, not a final verdict. The US questions joined the bank on October 10, 2026, a week after the test.

Which parts of the October 2026 SAT were hardest?

In Reading and Writing, the Information and Ideas questions were the hardest part. In Math, each of the four areas had about one Hard question in three.

Reading and Writing has four domains, or skill areas. Here is the Hard share in each one:

  • Information and Ideas (reading for evidence, data and logic): 45 of 77 questions Hard (58%).
  • Standard English Conventions (grammar and punctuation): 23 of 53 Hard (43%).
  • Craft and Structure (vocabulary, purpose and paired texts): 21 of 77 Hard (27%).
  • Expression of Ideas (transitions and student notes): 9 of 52 Hard (17%).

Two question types stood out. "Logical conclusion" questions, which ask "Which choice most logically completes the text?", had 18 Hard out of 27. Grammar questions on joining two complete sentences with a period or semicolon were Hard all 8 times.

Math also has four domains. Algebra had 12 Hard out of 34, Advanced Math 13 of 37, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis 5 of 14, and Geometry and Trigonometry 5 of 15.

What did students say about the October 2026 SAT?

Most students who posted said Reading and Writing was hard and Math was easier. That matches the numbers above for the International version, but not for US Math.

  • US Reading and Writing: 16 students in the r/SAT thread said it felt hard or harder than other tests, and only 2 said it felt normal. 4 said they ran out of time. They pointed to long science passages and several graph questions in a row. Our October 3 US Reading and Writing recap works through the questions they recalled.
  • US Math: 22 of 28 students who rated it called it easy. Five said the last two or three questions of Module 2 were the hard ones. See the October 3 US Math recap.
  • International: 18 comments called English hard (13 of them named Module 2), and none called it easy. Math was split: 10 easy, 7 hard. 13 comments said they ran out of time or had to guess. The October 3 International recap has the full count.

These counts come from public Reddit comments, so they show how the test felt to the students who posted. They are not a random sample.

A hard Module 2 is often a good sign. The Digital SAT is adaptive, which means the second half of each section changes based on how you did in the first half.

College Board's test structure page says the first module "contains a broad mix of easy, medium, and hard questions." Then, "based on how you perform on the first module, the second module of questions will either be more difficult or less difficult." So if Module 2 felt hard, you probably did well enough in Module 1 to get the harder set.

College Board also says "a range of section scores are possible no matter which second module a student sees." The module you get does not fix your score. Your answers in both modules do.

Does a harder test mean a better curve?

Not in the way most people mean. College Board's 2026 SAT annual report says a scaled score adjusts your raw score "in ways that ensure that results across different test forms are comparable." A harder form is not meant to cost you points.

College Board's scoring page says your score depends on "characteristics of the questions they answered right or wrong (e.g., the questions' difficulty levels)." It adds that "two students who answer the same number of questions correctly in a test section may earn differing section scores." So your score depends on which questions you get right as well as how many.

What did hard October 2026 Math questions look like?

Here are two questions from the US October 2026 Math section, as rebuilt in our October 2026 SAT Math Question Bank. Both are rated Hard. Try each one before you open the answer.

Question 1: a parabola and a line

The solution to the system y = −2x2 + 8x + 5 and y = −4x + 23 is (x, y). What is the value of x + y?

A) 9   B) 14   C) 11   D) 3

Show the answer

B) 14. Set the two right sides equal: −2x2 + 8x + 5 = −4x + 23. Move everything to one side: −2x2 + 12x − 18 = 0. Divide by −2: x2 − 6x + 9 = 0, which is (x − 3)2 = 0. So x = 3. Then y = −4(3) + 23 = 11, and x + y = 14. The traps are 3 (just x) and 11 (just y).

Question 2: a circle from a diameter

A circle in the xy-plane has a diameter with endpoints (2, 6) and (12, 16). Which equation represents this circle?

A) (x + 7)2 + (y + 11)2 = 200
B) (x − 7)2 + (y − 11)2 = 200
C) (x + 7)2 + (y + 11)2 = 50
D) (x − 7)2 + (y − 11)2 = 50

Show the answer

D. The center is the midpoint of the diameter: ((2 + 12)/2, (6 + 16)/2) = (7, 11). That rules out A and C, which have the wrong signs. The diameter's length squared is 102 + 102 = 200. The radius is half the diameter, so the radius squared is 200 ÷ 4 = 50. Choice B is the trap: it uses the diameter squared instead of the radius squared.

Did the October 2026 SAT repeat older questions?

Some passages did. Each TTA bank page has a repeated-content report that lists passages matching other tests in our collection.

The October 2026 Reading and Writing Question Bank page lists 94 repeated passages out of 300 (31%), matched across 27 other tests. The biggest overlap was the December 2025 bank, with 21 shared passages. The Math bank page lists 25 repeated passages out of 106 (24%), matched across 13 tests, led by the November 2025 Math bank with 7. If you worked those older banks, some October passages would have looked familiar.

What should you do before the November 7 SAT?

Practice the hard question types from October, then take a timed adaptive section. College Board's dates and deadlines page lists November 7, 2026 as the next SAT, with a registration deadline of October 23 and a late deadline of October 27. December 5, 2026 is next, with a registration deadline of November 20.

When do October 2026 SAT scores come out?

October 2026 SAT scores come out on Friday, October 16, 2026. College Board's score release dates page lists October 16 for students and October 19 for the K–12 school portal, for the October 3 weekend test. It also says "most scores from weekend tests are released 2–4 weeks after test day."

How we built this page: Difficulty figures come from TTA's own Easy, Intermediate and Hard ratings for every question in the October 2026 Reading and Writing bank (300 questions) and Math bank (106 questions), plus the September and August 2026 banks, read from our database on October 13, 2026. The October ratings were last updated on October 12, 2026, so they can differ from figures in TTA's earlier October recap pages. US-version questions are the bank items labeled "US"; all others are International or shared items. These are rebuilt practice questions and TTA ratings, not College Board data. We solved both sample questions ourselves and checked them against the bank's answer key. Student reaction counts come from TTA's October 3 recap pages, which counted public r/SAT comments by hand. Test dates, score release dates, test structure and scoring quotes come from College Board pages fetched on October 13, 2026 and linked above. Verified 2026-10-13.
